I use the Klein Duckbill pliers everyday. They are smooth also, which is perfect for dealing with removing components from circuit boards without damaging them. They are also perfect for removing the nut that is used to fasten a typical potentiometer without cosmetic damage to the fastener.

BTW, I have a pair of the Williams pliers you have pictured and they are absolutely terrible. The finish, balance, and jaw alignment is akin to HF/CHINA almost dollar store quality. Total waste of about $11. Oh well, It will keep me away from ever buying any Williams pliers again for sure.

smooth jaw is good at flattening/bending thin sheet metal without distorting it but like you said it is very poor at grabbing material. I only use mine if I want to bend or straighten something. it won't hold onto anything if you're trying to pull on it.

I have 6 different pairs, (mostly older stuff admittedly) and all have serrations. The Channel locks (again older, just not quite as old...) have the strongest serrations, the Krauters, the lightest. None are smooth at the tips.

I have snap-on duckbills. A little bit of serration at the end. I personally use them for safety wire. The serrations aren't too bad to where you'll snap the safety wire.

I've got Knipex 29-11-160 pliers, which have crosshatched grips, and quite a nice jaw shape. The grips aren't overly agressively crosshatched, which is probably good. They're nice, and a good size to have, although if you don't have other duckbills I'd start with an 8" pair first.
