Need electrical help/ lights

Ok, I'm pretty handy in a general way except when it comes to anything electrical. It's my blind spot, the hole in my knowledge so to speak. Anyhow, I've managed to keep together a good little collection of sheet metal tools, and want to make a few old liquor store type of signs, with arrows etc that light up either from a series of small bulbs, or backlite from the inside of the sign from a single bulb. Also thinking of making another tin man that could light up from inside.
Are there any sources online etc for lighting that would help me out. It needs to be simple, just install, insert bulbs, and plug in type of thing...

I would look into led lights, they sell them in tools that stick on so they would be straight,or even rope light to take the shape you want
