I'm looking to buy a workbench for my husband and need some help.
I know he want's it somewhat deep maybe 30-36", and at least 6 feet long.
This will be used for when he is working on the car.

My time is very limited so I need something that I can purchase rather easily. I've looked online at Sears and Gladiator but found those workbenches are only 2" deep. Is butcherblock something to be considered? Any insight, would be appreciated!

This one isn't for sale, But he would love it, it's on wheels and has a light mounted over the top, 110 volt 4 plug out let to power hand tools, it was just a 24inch X 6 foot work bench when I got it, and it took me about a month working part time on it to make it look like this, Good Luck,

I've got four Gorilla brand work benches from Menard's. Two are 4'x2' and the others are 6'x2'. The click together, and the 6' benches have two sliding drawers, the others have one. It also has an overhead shelve with pegboard to the rear. They've worked well for me, go together without bolts/nuts, and are pretty sturdy. The tops are particle board, and the newer ones seem to have gotten thinner in that respect.

I bought TWO of these,,,,eg,,at Lowes or Home Depot,,,,and connected them together,,,,,,THEN,,,,bought a Kitchen Counter Top,,,,about 6-8 feet long in the kitchen department,,,, ( i asked if they had any with some scratches,,,damage,,etc ),,,,it had a nice back splash,,,,and was plenty deep in size. Also has lights,,,and peg board.....

Mounted the counter top with some screws to the above mentioned work bench,,,,and it has been great..... LOTS of room,,,,,fairly cheap,,,,have drawers,,,storage space,,and a real big work space with the kitchen counter top mounted on it.

example of the type of "generic" workbench i bought,,,,x 2

example of counter top,,,,this is 6 feet long,,,back splash,,,etc,,,again,,find something that has some light damage/scratch/chip,,,,etc,,,usually inexpensive...

He could put this all together in less than a hour..............

Hi there to the OP -

I'm a little new here myself, but a very long-time lurker. I've been looking at these wood workbenches for quite some time, particularly the Common Man bench. Depending on what your husband is looking for, they IMO have an old school look about them, and from the descriptions appear to be capable of handling just about anything. It also appears that they're delivered fairly easily, but that all depends on how quickly you want it. Good luck !!!!

To address your size issue, 2' wide tops are standard and plenty of room to work on. If you go much widfer you (a) lose garage space and (b) end up just piling a bunch of stuff on top of the bench.
I'm sure you can get some are bigger (wider), but I haven't seen many. When you build one, you often cut a 4x8 sheet of ply/mdf/whatever in half, so as to minimize waste....again, making 2' wide.

if he specified 30" or better, i'd trust him with that. depending on the type of work he does, there may be a good reason. even if he wishes later for a smaller bench, it will be his decision. butcherblock or wood can be very nice, but does not always hold up well to large metal parts and heavy grease and oil. it can scratch, gouge, and then stain. for some people that may not be an issue, but it can be for others. is there a price range you had in mind? there are many industrial suppliers selling products that could work for you.

have you seen what type of work he does or is there another workspace in the garage that has or will remain there for a specific use?

i have steel, chemical resistant epoxy, and wood surfaces. each is much better suited for some tasks than others.

Might want to check out the welding table/bench from miller welding, quite versatile for many uses.

Yes, this is a nice bench, but is the dog included? I'm sorry but the nicest thing I see there is a German Shephard!
