Need Help Diagnosing a Single Phase Motor

The title says it all.

I have a 1992 IMS 16 speed drill press with a single phase motor. My old boss gave it to me saying it needed a new toggle switch, I'd like to say I'm familiar with AC power but I'm not at all.

The"old" toggle switch was still on the machine, it was an automotive switch rated for no more than 12 volts and none of the wires were connected to it. Also the power cord had the ground pin broken off of it so I replaced it wire by wire.

The ground is connected to the chassis on multiple points and have continuity from the chassis to the pin on the power cord.

The neutral was originally a red wire from the power cord, the new one has white insulation.

The hot is a black wire.

I'm installing a new toggle switch, to my understanding the hot from the power cord needs to go to either pin 1 or 3 on the switch, neutral needs to be On pin 2 and the hot from the motor on Either pin 1 or 3. Does this sound correct to any one of you? I'm a total newb when it comes to alternating current.

This is how my switch in wired up right now, Pin
#1 is hot from power cord, Pin#2 is neutral from power cord and motor(it was already spliced like that so I left it. And pin #3 is hot from motor.

I also bought an on-off-on switch by accident but it is a "SPDT Center Off 3/4HP, 20A 125V" so it's rated for this motor. Any help is appreciated I probably bit off more than I could chew but that's what life's about. Learning and fixing the problem.

No pictures. Also there is no reason to break the neutral, just wire that direct. The switch needs to be rated atleast 125v which you do and the correct amperage (20 is fine) . If you can post a link to the switch you're using I can confirm the poles you need to connect too.

Btw, being that you bought a "single pole, double throw" if you wire the neutral into it, you'll end up with a dead short in one of the positions. So once again just take that off the switch. Wire the hot leg to the common pole and the motor leg to one of the other and you'll be fine.

No need to switch neutral. Wire it direct.

Guess I'll have to learn how to post proper pictures. It was just of the model and serial number plate on the machine and another of the specs of the motor, I figured the neutral had to be on the switch because the previous owner had it spliced together with a female spade connector.

I believe this is the switch I bought. It has 3 posts labeled 1,2, and 3. Here is what's written on the bag it came in "Servalite 7503u h#393181 toggle switch SPDT center off 3/4hp,20a 125v,10A 250V"

We'll just disregard how it was wired before connect the neutral direct. Hot leg in to the center pole and motor lead to one of the outside poles. You'll probably find the connection is opposite of the switch direction. Another words if you connect the motor lead to the bottom of the switch (vertically installed) when you flip it up it will turn on. Your results may vary

SERVALITE Single Pole Metal Light Switch Item # 76457 Model # 884437 is the one you could have used.
In the switch you have "typically" the center post is the common "hot" in. The left and right poles are the switched "on" poles.
Meaning you would attach the motor lead to one of the poles. Chances are your switch doesn't have an On/Off nameplate with it.
