I'm rebuilding a manual transmission from a mustang, and thus dealing with a couple snap rings. I broke the tips off the harbor freight snap ring pliers I picked up. I then got some craftsman ones, and have bent those tips. I guess these c-clips are pretty strong. Anyway, I want a pair like this:

I want a pair that DOES NOT have removable tips. I want a pair that closed as the one above is, and opens as you squeeze it together. I like the little flat area on the tips area of those. I've watched a video detailing how to rebuild the transmission, and the professional uses a pair just like the above link. I just don't feel like paying $30 for a no name part. Something with a warranty would be nice. I already have a second transmission that also needs rebuilding, and I see many more in my future, so I don't mind paying a little more for some quality.

Any ideas?

i would say 26 dollars for an armstrong isn't a bad deal, and certainly not a no name brand. start hitting the auto parts stores but, i don't think you will find a quality one much cheaper. those retaining rings are pretty stout. that is why your snap ring pliers didn't cut it. i suppose you may find one in a pawn shop for next to nothing.

Personally I would just get the Armstrongs. You might get a pair at the pawn shop but it's a low probability.

At least it is for me. If I need it never find it cheap, but if I don't they'll be every where.

I would buy a pair of Knipex. We have some heavy duty snap rings on the machinery at my plant and they only ones that hold up well are the Knipex.

Another vote for Knipex, they make the absolute best snap ring pliers, make sure its from the 48-49 series though and not the older 44-46.

There is nothing else out there like the new knipex pliers.

are you looking for something like this? it has a flat area with a textured surface to grip the clips. I forgot what I bought this for it was either a front driveshaft or the rear axle of my 4runner. but what ever it was it worked like a charm.

The tips on the Wilde pliers look like they'll be the ones to get the last ring out
of the old Buick manual trans. I'm working on. Thank you, Krusty.

FNFS2000,

Why do you recommend the current Knipex 48, 49 series versus 44, 46 snap ring pliers? What features do the 48, 49 series possess to make them superior to the 44, 46 series? If someone owns some 44, 46 series Knipex pliers, do you recommend upgrading to the 48, 49 snap ring pliers.

Thanks.

Sometimes you have to stick a scratch awl or something of that sort into the holes of a snap ring and give them a little pop with a hammer to loosen them up enough to use the pliers.

Thats what it says, but I sure as hell DID NOT see it about a week ago when I was there. Oh well, I will be stopping there tomorrow.

take a look in the aisle that has stuff like inspection mirrors, pry bars, brake tools. that's where I found it.

They are light years apart. the old ones are just like every other plier on the market, the new ones are designed to actually work, and not put torsional flex on the rings. They have a unbreakable springsteel tip inserted in the milled face-So they hold the ring perfectly straight.
