need help finding replacement cond. fan for outside unit

i got a call from my wife around 2am saying that the outside unit was making some noise and it sounded like someone was playing a flute outside the window. when i got home i went to check it. it was the fan motor and it was trying to lock up. i turned the unit off and cranked up our back up window unit.

this morning i went out to tear into the unit. i got the fan off and flipped and sure enough it took some effort to spin the fan. i got the fan off the shaft and pulled the dust cover/seal off the shaft and hit it with some spray lube to bandaid the situation until i can get a motor shipped.

my problem now is "I" can not find a direct replacement for the motor.

its a GE model 5kcp39ff M967AS

1/6th HP and 825rpm

i would really like to find a direct replacement because i dont feel comfortable rewiring the thing. i will if i have to but all of my caps are brand new last year and i dont want to buy new ones and rewire for new caps and motor.

if you guys could help in this area with finding a motor it would be much appreciated!

Is that the top of a Trane condenser?

Grainger can probably match up the motor. While that are a business to business type of operation, if you work for a company that deals with them, or even remotely know of someone who deals with them, they will take your cash. Might not be the cheapest place in town, but they can get you a motor. Other solution is to call the dealer of condenser manufacturer and get a new one.

yes its the fan that pulls air over the coils on the outside unit. grainger has also started to sell to private party in the past few years so you really dont have to know someone to buy from them. i looked over their site today but didnt find a motor with the same model number as mine. i did find one or 2 that had the same power and RPM, not sure on the smaller details though.

I ordered a replacement two speed trane/GE condensor motor from them for $100 less than anyone locally could sell. Fast shipment too.

I was able to bandaid the sticking condensor fan motor in time for new to arrive. I removed the plastic oil plug on motor and added liberal amounts of oil while turning the motor shaft until it freed up enough to install and operate for 4 days. The day it crapped out finally, UPS delivered the new motor....

Also, Trane consolidated several motor part numbers; my original motor number no longer existed but the alternate motor fit perfectly and could have been used for internal air handler or external condensor motor.

Does it have to be the same model number? I replaced one a last month. I brought the old one to a motor rebuild shop and he checked the specs and sold me one with more HP. Its ben working fine. I had to buy a new fan because the shaft was larger, and because I couldn't read the specs on the capacitor he said I may need a new one if it didn't work properly.

it doesnt have to be i guess but im trying to keep from having to replace other things or rewire stuff.

You may have luck taking it apart cleaning the bearings and relubing them if bushed bearings or replacing if ball bearings. I've had such luck. The felt "reservoir" of oil had dried up. Replinished that, good to go for over a year now.

Call up a local A/C supply house. If you are paying cash they will usually sell direct...

this was my 2nd time dealing with them and not only have they been able to get the part that i needed but they were A) friendly B) happy to help C) make sure that i would have no troubles with wiring and D) good pricing that while it might be a few dollars more i feel safe in knowing that im getting parts that will swap right in with no fuss.

i dealt with diane and she was great until i asked about wiring, she put mike on the phone who was happy to look up the schematic and tell me which wires i had while i was looking at my fan. he was spot on! they are extremely nice unlike many places.





Charles, i went to grainger this morning and while they didnt have the GE motor i needed they did have a dayton but couldnt verify the wiring. that motor was 135 dollars plus sales tax and waiting for it to ship. i gladely paid the extra 50 for a grand total of 197 dollars with keith supply because not only did i get a motor that WILL work but i also got 3 new caps, shipping and no sales tax.


thats a great way to start my day!

I know this thread is over a year old but I just wanted to thank you for the recommendations for Keith Specialty. It helped me this weekend when I was dealing with the same situation.

I had one that was squealing on starting and all it was --the water/dust shield was spinning on the shaft on starting. So now I go on and get another plastic shield when I replace an outdoor motor.

If you oiled it and it fixed it I bet it will last 10 years now with yearly oiling!
