I need a shop/garage for place to store my boat in the winter, tractor, SxS, trailer, mower, and implements. It need a workshop to work on stuff like changing oil sharpen blades etc. Considering pole construction 40x80 or a 40x60 with lean too on each side. I’m also considering traditional building. Any help will be appreciated.

Pretty vague, but 40x80 sounds nice. Location means something too, if you can leave some of this out but under a lean-to roof extension, there is a lot of bang for the buck in that.

Maybe share a view of the property you can put this on, where you're thinking about putting it, slope of the area. That's usually the starting point of building design unless you have massive amounts of space.

How big is your boat? Big boats and some tractors might require a 14' tall door. I would want at least ONE 14' door on a shop of that size.

Steel or pole barn?

At 16-18' that gives you the option to do a mezzanine eventually.

Do you want to be able to drive-through or individual "bays?

Sorry, it’s going in a field below my house. My boat is prob 30ft and my tractor will fit under 12 ft door.

Location? Code, permitting or Hoa requirements to deal with? Hiring it done or partly/fully DIY?

If the boat will be parked parallel to the 40ft wall, I'd want a door on one side that tractor and boat can fit through and another door in line on the opposite side that the tractor can get out through.

Put at least one 14' door in. Won't cost much more. It'll cost a LOT more in the future if you buy something that you can't fit in your shop. It also adds resale to the type of people (like many of us at GJ) that are interested in properties with shops. A 2400-3000 sqft shop is a real bummer for me if I can't get an RV in it.

I do 4' "man doors" also. I won't do 3' anymore.

I assume by "traditional building" you're talking about stick residential framing (typical residential construction). That's going to cost quite a bit more. I get it if you have property aesthetics to consider or want it to specifically match the house.

Why not red iron? They'll have that building up in 3 days after the slab is dry. You can span the entire building without trusses, so you get a lot more space going up. Add a brick ledge and make it fancy if you want.

Insulation / heating-cooling plans?
