Need help ID-ing a drill press

Hi folks,

I need some help identifying this old drill press I scored today at the local flea market. I made sure it fired up before I bought it, and except for some belt slap from the old cracked belt, it ran true with a nice clean hum.

I don't think this is the original paint job, and I can't find any manufacturer markings on any of the castings. I also suspect the motor isn't original.

I'm thinking that is either just post Camel back, (very early standalone benchtop) or an inexpensive knock off of the 30's/40's Atlas and Walker- Turners, of the 30's 40's

Is the spindle inside the quill on bearings or bushings?

Hmm maybe a cruse through the pre-Craftsman Sears catalogs might yield some clues...

Nope, One in the 33 or 35 catalogs was sort of similar, but not cigar...

The quill pulley would need to be removed, so you could have a look.

Get a pic quartering upwards to the top of the chuck, but I think the quill is too small a Dia for it to be anything but a bushing, with probably a thrust ball bearing to take the load when actually drilling.

Nothing wrong with bushings but you do want t keep it oiled to minimize wear.

I did get the front pulley off, after figuring out that the alignment screw was in fact not what holds the pulley in place. After a little head scratching I noticed a separate hook type of assembly at the bottom rear of the pulley that did that.

I took a picture from the top, thinking that might be helpful. I'll have to get a picture as you described tomorrow, as I'm more than a little bushed.

That looks like a bushing to me. A little hard to tell. If you turn the spindle, does the "inner race" that it's against, also turn, or does it stay put? If the former, its a bearing, if the latter, a bushing.

I'm not sure what "inner race" means. I get the idea of bearing races, but I don't know what I'm looking for here.

Yeah, too much in the way there...

What I mean is the inner race of a ball bearing race, there will be an inner, and an outer and you will either see shields or the balls and ball spacer/retainers.


If it's a bushing you won't see that...

If you had a bunch of toolheads turning your spindle, you'd be that color too !!!

Well I do want to repaint it, in a color that seems more appropriate to its vintage for me. So I probably will end up having to dismantle it anyway, and I'll find out then if it uses bushings or bearings.

Can you guys offer any tips on doing so? Is it a bad idea?

Well I'm back after a long hiatus. Life sort of got in the way of doing much with tools for most of the last year.

The drill press is up and running as of today (pics coming soon). I put a new power cord and switch on the motor, got a HF linked belt to replace the original v-belt, and have already completed my first very small project with it.

One thing I noticed is that the motor shaft appears to be slightly bent. This causes some mild vibration, and either causes or seems to exacerbate some minor runout in the chuck.

I've seen various threads on GJ about fixing a bent spindle, but I haven't found much about fixing a bent motor shaft. Is that something that can be done? Or would replacing the motor be a better option?

Here are a couple pictures of the drill press set up, along with the Craftsman block grinder I bought and rewired last year.

The grinder was put to use for the very first time this evening, after putting a wood top on the stand and setting everything up.

I really feel like my basement workshop is starting to come together!
