Ive read most of the posts about vises and started looking for a decent vise a while ago. I recently stumbled across this vise on craigslist. I thought it was a wilton bullet, but the slide is square. It doesn't really have any identifying marks on it other than what you see. I would guess that its around 50lbs, the jaws are 4.5" and the slide seems to be around 7in opened. The screw is fully enclosed.

Id love to know anything about it. Also...Do you guys think its worth buying?
My other option is a new model yost machinist vise.

Both of the vises are relatively cheap, but ill probably end up overhauling whichever one I get, since they aren't in the greatest shape.

Thanks in advance!!

I have the same US made Wilton vise with 4" jaws. It is not a machinist vise but it is very well built and works well. The swivel base is massive. Well worth buying.

Any idea when it was made or the model #? Is the yost a better buy?

The seller is asking 100 for it. The Yost is a bit cheaper, but has more rust (pic is of the type of yost im looking at).
I don't mind a little bit of a project to get either back into shape.

Any idea which one I should go for? I generally prefer bringing nicer old gear back into working shape, but if the yost is a better vise i dont mind getting something a little newer.

Any more info on the wilton??

Yost....especially since it's cheaper. They are pricey vises also. As long as it doesn't have any cracks or repairs get it. The cleanup/resto is the fun part.

I also like the yost vise like the one you put in the pic. The jaws sit a lot higher and allow you a little more vertical clamping room.

Ive read up on vises a bit and haven't heard too much about yost. Ive also heard that the older vises are generally made better.
However, I cant find anything on this particular wilton either and most wiltons seem to be pretty well documented.

This definitely wont be the last vise I buy, but I would like this one to be a very nice vise that Ill keep forever and never feel the need to exchange it for something better. If there are better model wiltons or other us/europe made vises, ill hold off on this wilton. If the yost is a solid vise, Ill pick that one up instead. If not, Ill hold off for something better.

Thanks for the advice!

Any other votes for or against either the Wilton or yost? If you guys think one of them is worth it, I'm going to try to pick it up this weekend.

So far it seems like you guys favor the yost.
