I picked this up at an estate sale but I don’t know what it is. I’ve found similar ones from the same maker but nothing that looks like this. Closest I could find was a magnetic sine plate. Does anyone know the name and what it’s used for? The brand is Hermann Schmidt of East Hartford Conn. Thanks in advance.

That is a very expensive tool new. Hermann Schmidt makes some of the nicest precision tools available.

I would think you could clear a few hundred bucks on eBay to the right buyer.

Or keep it if you do machine work. They’re an heirloom tool.

Do be careful when closing the plates together. Far too often some bone head will allow the roll and the bottom plate to slam together leaving either a small dent in the plate or a small flat on the roll from the impact. Even a small mark is bad for it, some folks put a small piece of plastic between the two when closing it up. You have a very well made piece of precision tooling, spray some rust inhibitor on it and inside the box. Rust will ruin it and greatly reduce the value. Wish I had one.

Thank you for the info. I really have no use for it. The guy running the sale had no idea what it was either so I believe I got a great deal ($30). I was just looking for some information so that I can list it.

Thanks, does the fact that it says “patent pending” on it affect the value do you know?
