Hey guys I'm looking for an answer to this one as well. On the big Maxx box(45k LP) it says its good for low ceilings 7-8ft. I have an 8ft ceiling. The propane guy refused to deliver my bottle saying it needed to be 8ft from floor to bottom of heater(CSA B149.1). As it is mentioned in the installation manual. He says the only way he can deliver propane is if I get a letter from Mr. Heater stating it is ok to mount below 8ft. What do I do?? Why does it say that on the box and contradict itself in the installation manual?
Thanks

I seriously wouldn't worry about it. As long as there are no inspectors it shouldn't be a safety issue.

Unfortunately you wont like this answer to your problem but you need to provide some form or protection under the heater as a guard( bollard or barrier anchored to the concrete) to prevent any vehicle from running into it.

Keep in mind for any natural gas installation permits need to be pulled and licensed gas fitters should be used.

If there was any type of serious issue or loss of life created by the installation of this heater insurance companies just love to look at ways to weasel their way out of coverage.

As far as guarding that shouldnt be an issue as there is a big vertical bandsaw blocking the garage door opening(2500lbs). This bay is my dedicated work shop area with two old mills and a small shop lathe. I just dont understand how they can say onething on the box and another in the instruction manual

As far as the manual and the box are concerned I couldn't tell you why there is a
discrepancy maybe a call to the manufacturer is in order.

One thing I do know when it comes to having the installation inspected and passed by the authority having jurisdiction (Gas company or Department of labor) the installation manual will be the only thing considered. Special deviations from the manual can be achieved you would have to contact your gas company and ask for details how this can be done.

B 149 section 3.16 Appliances in garages

3.16.1 An appliance in a garage shall be protected against damage

3.16.2 In a storage garage an appliance shall be installed shall be installed so that a component capable of igniting a flammable vapour is located not less than 18 inches or 450 mm above the floor.

3.16.3 In a repair garage an appliance shall be installed so that a component capable of igniting a flammable vapour is located not less than 4.5 feet or 1400mm above the floor.

There maybe be some amendments to this subsection I haven't bothered to pick up the latest edition of the B 149

Really I don't think your going to have any problems with height of the heater just make sure all permits are pulled and necessary inspections are done as a home owner having this all done absolves you from any liability.

No need to worry, read the heading of where it says that, it is under "Garage Installation" like comercial garage not "Workshop" also if it below 8' it is the descretion of the inspector and he may make you put a BS bracket to protect the heater. The bottom of my heater is 7'2" and the door is 7'0". He still made me put the bracket, I said you can only get something 7'0" into the garage. He still wanted it :headscrat

I will take a picture of mine tonight.
