I'm needing to mount a hose reel, regulator/filter, and manifolds from a rapidair kit. The shop is steel beam framing and needing some ideas on mounting this stuff.

Here is what I've thought so far

This is the center beam that I'll be working with

Thinking about this route with running either screws or bolts through the sides to hold it in place. Another option would be fitting wood inside the beam and running screws through the side.

Get some 1/4" or 3/8" beam clamps and some unistrut and make a bracket to mount the real to.

No welder or anything.

Here is a view of the reel held up to the beam

Slightly wider than the beam opening.

Also I'm not real familiar with what yall are talking about or how exactly it would work.

A Hilti/Ramset/Explosiver nailer thing will happily pound nails into that beam, if you want to do something mildly complicated. If really complicated is your thing (as it seems to be), I have a few more suggestions. How about creating a friction welding system using an old drill press, or buying a few large capacitors and building your own stud welder. Of course, you'll need a lathe to manufacture the studs. Maybe you could design an electromagnet mount for your hose reel, powered by a small air powered turbine/alternator setup tucked into the back of the hose reel, so you don't need to run power to energize the magnet?

The complicated possibilities are endless, but it seems the easiest solution would involve a drill and a good split point drill bit. I see a Milwaukee 18V lithium ion charger in the background, with a fully charged battery, so it looks like you already have half of the solution. The beam has a good size dent in the flange, so I think its safe to say that a couple 1/4" holes aren't going to impact the overall structural integrity of your building.

As mentioned, Unistrut. Cut it to size and use either the beam clamps for the strut or drill some holes and use some self taping screws to hold the strut, then mount the reel.

Unistrut beam clamp holding unistrut to a beam. Put two of these on the inside of the C channel of the building, Unistrut on the outside where you have the 2x4 then bolt the hose reel to the unistrut using cone nuts. You will find all of this at Home Depot.

Google Images search for beam clamp and you will get ideas.

Thanks guys. I'll hit up home depot. One of the technicians at work said I could borrow his little welder as well if I wanted to just weld a mounting plate there

Welding or drilling on the beam will weaken it if it matters. Clamping to it will not.

I started on the unistrut project this afternoon and have an issue. The width of the reel mounting plate requires two strut places to be mounted too close together where I won't be able to clamp the second piece to the beam. Any ideas or different brackets to make it work?

I'm thinking that I should use this cheap reel and mount to my work bench and buy a nice retractable reel that would have a larger mounting plate for the unistrut

Sorry I read the title of this thread and the only thought I had was that "mounting in the metal shop" is a very odd ****** position.

Yes, definitely go with the clamp...or something...back to adulthood I go.
