Need help moving a four post lift in KC

I live in the Kansas City area and need to move a four post lift from the house I am currently in to the one I am moving into later this week.

I *had* contacted a service company to move it and was set until the previous owner of my new house failed to get his boat out of the space where the lift is supposed to go on mutually agreed upon date. He is now saying he'll have the boat out by Weds morning (and fair enough, its still his house at this point), but now the company I was hoping to move it won't be available to move it for another two weeks, long after I have to be out of my old house.

Does anyone have the phone number for a decent lift service company in the Kansas City area?

Thanks! ...Scott

Well, he has been a member for over a year, just not posting. Give him a break.

flat bed tow truck is the way to go. Should be able to do it on fairly short notice.

Is the lift bolted down? On casters?

Get some good dimensions and have them ready when you talk to the tow companies.

Or rent a car trailer or U-haul with 4 guys. If you have the kind with the cylinder on the top connecting the 2 posts, then you will need 15 guys!

No this is not a drive by, I just have a life outside internet forums.

Once I get settled in to the new place, I'll try and post a bit more. In the meantime, thanks to those of y'all who offered advice. If I had a bit more time, I'd take it apart and trailer it myself with a couple of buddies but that option went out the window already. I tried a couple of local towing companies but didn't get much of a positive response when I said "assembled 4 post lift". Its not on casters but I'd think any moving/towing company would have dollies. lol

I was hoping someone would have the name of a company that deals with lifts tho, so that I can also have them do some basic maintenance and safety inspection on it. I regularly check it but haven't had a pro inspect mine since I assembled it about 8 years ago and figured they might know what to look for as well as being skilled at moving them. Its an Autolifter M6 and its worked flawlessly, btw. I'll keep dialing...

You won't find anybody to move it assembled, and it's not a good idea. Search for heavy equipment movers. Those guys can move anything. They roll out with a fork lift and huge tool box.

I don't have any experience yet with lift installers in the KC area, but I know the manager at Coleman American (Allied) Moving Co. They're located on Shawnee Mission Pky. They would certainly be able to move your lift if you can disassemble it for them. If you're interested, let me know and I'll get you his name and contact info.

I'd genuinely offer to help you move it, but my 16' flat bed trailer probably isn't big enough for your 4 post lift.

I'd offer a hand as well, but my 12' trailer isn't going to be of much use! I saw a Rotary service truck driving around the other day, they may have some contacts in the area to help you out.

There are folks on Craigslist who specialize in moving fully built backyard sheds from house to house. They have the equipment to get it out of the garage and onto a trailer. It might not be as safe and clean as if you dismantled the whole thing and then moved it, but if you want to move it in one piece, you might try searching for a shed mover.

Good luck!

Thanks a bunch, guys, I appreciate the offers of help and suggestions. I managed to work out a deal with the original guy that was going to move it (and the delay was no fault of his) and he came out today before he left town for the next two weeks. He disassembled it and got it moved to the new shop/house in under three hours. He will be coming back out in two weeks to reassemble it for me and after watching him work, I'll let him do it rather than fight with it myself like I did when I originally built it. He's got the tools (specifically a manual genie lift) and 15 years experience and had a few suggestions on how to tweak it to make it better next time.

He travels and is based out for Springfield MO, but comes to KC regularly so if you need help with a lift (installation, moving or maintenance) and you want his name and number, pm me. I won't post it here unless someone asks for it so that I don't get accused of spamming the board, and I have zero financial interest in helping him get business.

As for the KC area folks, I also have a garage condo at the Carriage House in Desoto, if y'all would be interested in getting together for a drinks and shop talk sometime, let me know. I have some Porsches and Harleys I play with (hence the need for garage space) and I'd be happy to host an informal gathering somewhere once things settle down again for me.

Regards, ...Scott

I was just going to make a suggestion, but I am sure your result came out better and probably cheaper.

Glad you got it taken care of. Carriage House is a nice place. I wish I had a place there!

Sheesh, I should have put two and two together faster than this... Dave, how are you doing? :). Still active with the Mini club?

Yep, bigger, better parties coming up, and a grand opening show at the new place on May 1, so look for an invite for it. It's only eight miles further than the old place so it shouldn't be too bad for most folks to get there.

As to the original topic, I am relieved to have the lift out of my hair and dealt with for the moment, the rest of the move is killing me.

Yep, we just got back from a 5 day trip to the Eureka Springs area with 9 friends, all in classic Minis! Mine is the "different" one, in the middle....

So, you moved your shop to a car-condo in Desoto?

Look forward to seeing you soon....
