Picked up this guy the other day for $75. pressures up to 125 or so just fine, turns back on at 80 or so no problem there. i'm not too familiar with air compressor terminology, but i'm learning. the problem i have run into is that after about the 4th or fifth cycle, it has started leaking out of the intake and out of the crank when the oil fill dipstick is out. the filter that was on it when i got it is not worth mentioning. I did remove the top valve covers and discovered that it was nasty inside due to the lack of filtering. i cleaned it the best i could.

from what i have read i have a bad or leaking reed valve. i suspected dirt build up, that is why i removed the covers and cleaned. it was the low pressure that was dirty, the high pressure was fine. I did come across this site http://www.aircompeq.com/ka.htm but that is about it. i can get some pictures up tomorrow if it helps. Thanks

Is this happening while running or when off?

If this is happening while the compressor is off, make sure the centrifugal unloader valve is working properly.

There should be a check valve in the discharge line. Probably a tank check. Screwed into the tank and the discharge line attaches to it. It is designed to prevent the air in the tank from coming back on the compressor.
Make sure you vent the tank to atmosphere before you remove it.

Judging by pictures I see of unloading valves and where they are positioned on the pump, I can't seem to find one. But I can spin the pump by hand when the tank is full, telling me there is no pressure in the cylinders. I may be wrong though.

Yes. This is happening while off.

i'm guessing this is the discharge line and inside of this fitting i should find the check valve?

Here is the centrifigal unloader and as the pictures show, this is the only copper line that has been replaced, and i'm thinking that the unloader valve should be where this 90 elbow is.

Yes I believe you are correct. The last picture looks like someone replaced the unloader valve with a regular 90 Degree fitting:headscrat Its no wonder the crankcase is hissing….:lol_hitti

Better get that fixed pronto!

after removing some parts and inspecting further, i noticed that i do in fact have the unloader valve, although missing the nut and improperly installed

Removed discharge lines and what fittings i could and shot air into the tank with my other compressor, air came right back out. so i determined i have a bad check valve, but i don't have a large enough wrench to remove the 1.5in nut on the tank, dang.

That would solve both problems probably, as I think the unloader valve leaks a bit as well. I'll look into it more. If I can get the check valve working I may call it good for now. I'll see tonight. Thanks
