Hey!

I have a cottage garage that Im slowly doing a car restoration project in... Its an hour and a half 1 way away from where I live.

Right now we have a super basic setup for radiant heat. It works when its on for sure but I want to add some control to it and add a wifi controller so I can trigger it before I go up there.

current setup is:
Electric domestic hot water tank and recirculating pump on a heavy duty dual pole switch. There is really no control right now other than regulating the HWT temperature max.

What Im hoping to do:
Wifi control to turn on HWT and control pump
have some kind of temperature control? I really only need it to get to a working temperature and not a hot air temperature for most of what Im doing.

Mechanically I dont want to change much. I dont want to add a different heat source, it works fine just takes like 2 days to warm up if its really cold out/in and the pump works well too. its a 110v pump i believe.

Thanks for any suggestions.

A double pole contactor on the input wiring, controlled with a WiFi thermostat. You will need to wire the thermostat so it is powered all the time.

If the pump is 120 volt, you will also need a relay to control it. I really should be 240 volt. It would be way simpler!

24 volt transformer, WiFi thermostat and a 240 volt, 30 amp, contactor with a 24v coli, plus a relay for the pump if it is 120 volt.

Over the WiFi you can shut it off , or set the space temperature up or down. You can set it to 45F when you are gone, or just turn off the heat, then turn it up to 65 some time before you get there,

Do you need to/want to shut off the water heater along with the pump? If not, you can use any number of relays and a low voltage smart thermostat to do what you want to do. Just cycle the pump as needed and keep the tank hot during your heating season.

For my garage radiant heat I have a Nest thermostat tied to a Taco SR501 relay board. The beauty of the taco is that it can supply both the 24V line (R) and the common (C) to the Nest.

I like your approach; don't overthink or over complicate things.
