Need help SAP working on boiler

Hi I'm in the middle of changing my Feed Water Pressure Regulator on my boiler it has a threaded black pipe on one side it looks like it may have had pipe dope on it, Should I go get some or can I use Teflon tape?? I don't want any problems later.

The teflon tape will be fine. Just make sure the thread is clean before applying. If the thread is so so go around more. Normally I would go six or seven times. You should have a union on one side, so if it does drip, you will be able to tighten more.It's only 1/2 or 3/4'' pipe.

I prefer pipe dope when doing something with hot water. Teflon may work if you wrap it around enough times, it may only be a temporary fix though.. If it leaks fix with pipe dope later.

Thanks guy's I made it to the box store and got the pipe dope. I made it by ten minutes. Its all in and the heat is on. Mama's happy now.

The purpose of pipe dope or teflon tape is to lubricate the threads so you can tighten the joint enough that the tapered threads "make up". For your purpose, teflon, correctly applied is fine. It is the metal threads that make the joint, not the dope...either of the dopes

Pipe dope manuf like to make you think it is their stuff that is the magic elixir. It isn't.
