Hello Everyone :)

Im about to re-roof a house and the last bit of kit I need is a shear. Ive narrowed it down to two options

Option 1:
Malco turn your drill into a shear attachment

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NE...AU_Tool_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d02ffb49

+ Cheaper than Opt 2
-Doesnt appear to have rotating cutting head like Opt 2

Option 2:
Dewalt 18V Cordless shear

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DEWALT-D...8887946?pt=AU_Power_Tools&hash=item2a26299d8a

+ Rotating cutting head
- More Expensive

If you can help me out with any experience of either of these tools I'd like to hear your thoughts

Thanks

easiest, fastest thing to cut shingles with is a standard utility knife, especially if it is warm outside and the shingles are on the cheaper side. if its is cold (i.e 40 degrees f) and the shingles are thick, a shear would come in handy.

pick up some standarn blades as well as some hook blades and youll be set. no need to go purchases a shear unless you plan on doing a lot of roofs. and in that case id buy of of those shears that is like a paper cutter

Some responses you got. :)

No, a metal cutting blade used on galvanized corrugated metal will open it up to rust. Shearing is the way to go. Shingles? Who said anything about shingles?

I have two handheld sheet metal cutters.
1) Bosch 1500C. This is a 16 gauge shear, similar in design to what you linked. It cuts sheet metal beautifully, but this sort of shear won't work for corrugated roofing. I tried it when I bought some corrugated polycarbonate, and you can cut along the ridge or the valley, but not across them. It doesn't fit going up and down the waves. Maybe it might work on a flatter sheet than I tried it with. I see people saying the Malco works fine going across the sheet, so maybe this will work fine, but that depends on the angle of your sheet's ridges.

2) Fein nibbler. This is what I'd use for the cross cuts. It makes a huge mess with all the punchouts, but has no problem at all negotiating around ups and downs.

that would be my bad. i've used the malco shear before. its alright. but i think youd be best off with a dedicated metal nibbler. if its a one time thing just get a cheapo. as for the malco shear, they are made near my home and my buddy's uncle works at malco, so we get a few things for free

Check EBay for a corded Milwaukee or Kett...the cordless will leave you wanting, and I've seen a Dewalt get smoked in 4 hrs...I have the Malco drill attachment, but its more meant for quick, in-a-pinch type jobs that are experienced by HVAC techs...

My brother-in-law owns a metal roofing business, and I was a commercial HVAC tech for years, years ago....you'll probably find a used US made Kett for <$50 that will do your house and outlive you afterwards...I have a US made Milwaukee...

Update - I just checked EBay - only 1 newer Kett corded for $85, but I found several Milwaukee shears and nibblers for cheap...I'm guess they're newer, and 'Nese made, though...
