It's an old snap on box. Kra 300b. Im not really interested in a full on restoration at the moment. A friend got it fully functional for me so the drawers all open and shut pretty nice. It has some surface rust and spots where the paint has completely worn off. I figure I'd get more use out of it than what I'd get from selling it. I really just want to use it but I don't want the rust getting any worse than it is. I might get it painted someday but for now I just want to use it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ive had the same problem and tried everything from wd40 to spray on waxes. The best oil ive found is Marvel Mystery Oil in a spray bottle. I had my old snap on top chest in my service truck for about 4 winters and it probably had less rust on it when I took it out. When I bought it, it was used with some rust where paint was missing or worn off. I keep a light coat on all my boxes and clean tools with it as well. The company I work for now started buying it by the gallon because the rest of the mechanics were using mine to clean their tools, boxes, and it works as a good assembly lube. Eventually it turned some surface rust on my box back to bare metal without hurting the surrounding paint. Hope this helps.

I've had good luck with WD40. I read an article in a woodworking magazine the other day posted here that rated wd40 above many similar and more expensive products for inhibiting rust.
