need help w excavation cost

Tomorrow I have a guy coming to give me a quote on excavating for a foundation. I'm going to build an attached 24' deep by 32' wide garage. There will be 2 garage doors in front, 1 in rear. In my area (Ontario Canada) we need to go down at least 4 feet. Additionally, there will be about 18" of the top that needs to be pushed back as the floor of this new garage will be 1.5' below grade as it is now.

This guy is just quoting on the top removal and "U" shaped foundation/footing excavation.

What should I be expecting for something like this? I don't know if it'll be $5000 or $25,000. It'll be hard for me to get 2 or 3 estimates so I'd like to know when he gets there if it seems fair.

Thought or tips etc really appreciated!

My shop is 24x32. Cost for the entire thing was 16k finished.

I only had to go down 24" for mine. I would bet 3-4k would be a fair estimate.

Excavating is the cheap part. It has been a couple of years since I have had a 'hoe guy here, but when I had a crawlspace dug out for my family room addition (24' x 24') it was $375 for digging it 4' deep At the time he charged $40/hr. A couple of years ago I had a guy with a D9 Dozer come in and cut my backyard down by a good 3-4' to fill in a 1/4 acre of pond. Start to finish, 8 hours and $1500. Again, not knowing how prices go in Canada, but for what you are talking would more than likely be $500-$750 in my area.

Excavating cost me around $150/160 an hour last year...$75 for the excavator (bobcat) and $80 or so for the dumptruck.

I just paid $1600 for a 28x34. They dug one day, and they helped with the pouring of the footer the next (cost of rebar and concrete not included in that price)

Whole job, including backfill and footing drains: ~$5000 USD. Depends on many conditions though- is the cut material staying onsite? What kind of soil is it? How is the access? Lots of room, or pretty snug? How much drainage work do you want done? 4' deep is right at the max depth before they have to start cutting back a slope so they dont wind up with a confined space. Report back with the contractor's line-itemed quote, and I can help tell you how he did.
