Need help w/ Pneumatic Drill purchase

I'm in the market for a pneumatic drill for light to medium shop use. I've already decided on a keyed chuck w/ reverse. I can use a 1/4" or 3/8" drill, but am leaning towards the 1/4" because of the small size and weight.

After much confusing research I've narrowed down my brand choices to Chicago Pneumatic (not HF), Florida Pneumatic, and IR.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Monte...stop it! You've already cost me a **** load of money! :)

Besides, I don't think Bosch air tools are available in the US...or are they?

The gearcase of this air jigsaw has the same part number than the electric saw which is "Made in switzerland" so maybe the air saw is swiss too or at least the gear housing ... :)

On your original question...which brand of air drill...

I've been getting air tools off eBay and Craigslist lately, which has me considering other aspects of my tool buy, such as availability of rebuild kits, if I end up with a lemon and need parts.

I have found that generally, IR rebuild kits are more readily available and CHEAPER than Chicago Pneumatic kits/parts. Not something you'll need for a while, but may factor into your purchase decision, if you are thinking about a tool which might last your lifetime.

This seems to particularly matter in tools which wear out more quickly, like impact wrenches. I really like the design and quality of Chicago Pneumatic...I think they build the better tool. But, in the long run, I'm going to have to rebuild that impact wrench if I use it a lot...and the rebuild is only going to cost me about $25 with IR.

Drills seem to last better...I just got a Chicago Pneumatic CP 787 drill online for $10. I took it apart, cleaned it thouroughly, re-greased and lubed it, and it purrs like a kitten. It has clearly worn out more than one chuck (The chuck which came with it was not functional and not the original), but the internals are still in perfect working order.

If you are primarily using smaller drills (1/4 inch or smaller), then I'd go with a 1/4" drill...even the 3/8's drills are fairly heavy for frequent use.

Just my 2 cents...hope it helps with your decision.

Use IR.. easy to get, affordable and you'll be able to get a rebuild kit 20 years from now & go 3/8" chuck... you won't be sorry

Thanks for the advice.

I ended up buying a Florida Pneumatic 3/8" air drill. The price was right and they are made in Florida. I called the company and parts are readily available and ship same day.

Did they tell you this, or you saw this in writing, or you assumed by the name?

A lot of their lineup comes out of asia. They do have big facility in US, but from what I have gathered, that seems to be for their ultra pricey stuff. Like $600 air tools, not $60 air tools. :D

Have you considered a JET brand drill?

Elroy's employer uses a lot of air drills in their operation and have found the JET brand drills to perform well. They could use a better chuck but a far as the air motor is concerned, you won't have any problems.

Just a suggestion

I called and they verified what the website stated. Late next week I'll be in Jupiter and they also invited me for a tour. Good times.
