I picked up my first Reed this afternoon and need a little info. This is a 204 1/2. It operates nice and smooth with no visible cracks. The jaws teeth aren't in too bad of shape either.

1. What's the approximate age of this vise?
2. What was the original color? Example?
3. What is the length and diameter of the handle? What's the diameter of the balls on each end.

The Reed dimensions increase along with jaw width. I do not have a 4 1/2, but i posted what i do have below, along with a pic of a 5 and 6.
3 1/2= 1 balls, 9 1/4 oal w/ balls
5= 1 1/2 x 14 oal
6= 1 3/4 x 17 oal
408= don't ask!

I have used the McMaster balls on a reed 206, worked fine using hand files, drill press, and a tap. Threaded are available, file flat for appearance.

There are many fine examples of different handle making techniques on this board if you search around.

Nice vise, love my Reeds.
