36x60 garage is ordered and is going up in 2 1/2 weeks.. i need help with fig out the wiring.. i had the house service upgraded from 100 amp to 200amp and had elect add a disconnect under the meter for the garage.. it will be 150 ft behind the house. i saved the 100 amp panel and breakers that came out of the house (only 3 years old).. my question is.. what size wire do i need from disconnect to new panel.. will 3/0 copper work? and where do i hook them in to.. when i took the panel off and looked inside at the disconnect, there is no place to run those big wires to.. the wires run down the house threw the meter into a 200 amp disconnect on the top then they run out the bottom of the disconnect threw the foundation into the new 200 amp panel.. i dont see how i am suposed to hook the garage service into it..

It sounds like you have only one disconnect, you need a separate one, supplied by a meter socket with two taps.......... or.......... you use a 200 amp disconnect that has a place for circuit breakers also, and you install a 90, 100, whatever, and supply the shop from that.

If the METER and METER SOCKET is 200 amp rated, then you will only be allowed to have ONE 200 amp disconnect that will have to supply both the house and then the garage.

If the METER and METER SOCKET is greater than 200 amp, say a 320 amp, they you could have a dual tap meter socket (one with two legitimate taps) and supply a 200 amp disconnect for the house and a 100 amp disconnect for the garage.

It sounds like you or the electrician had a misunderstanding. He install only one disconnect and it was for the house. Sounds like he didn't install one for the garage.

as charles said, sounds like the EC didnt install a disconnect for the garage.

post pics, and the make/model of the disconnect

if doing it all over again, a good way to do this is use a feed through panel with a main in place of the outside disconnect. This gives you your main breaker, 6 or 8 spaces for feeder to garage, outdoor receptacles, etc and a pair of subfeed lugs to feed the panel in the house.

My first question is do you have what is sometimes referred to as a house trailer disconnect? Meaning is the disconnect built into the meter base with breakers? There would be a 200 AMP breaker on the top with a spot for additional breakers below. If you do then it's a very easy fix. Here is a pic.

If you have a seperate disconnect and meter base the way you are talking about doing it would require you to disconnect service to the house and either come out of your house breaker box with a sub panel if you want 100 service in the garage or your house breaker box itself. I'm guessing your disconnect was put in to save you from seperate service to the garage and another inspection. Depending on your breaker box in your house you may be able to put a 100 breaker in it.

For wire size 2 AWG would do it ran underground in schedule 80 pvc.

With a 200 amp meter base and 200 amp service in your house you don't have the option of putting in 2 seperate disconnects below the meter.
