I'm in the process of rebuilding a Dayton bandsaw, while I have it stripped down for cleaning and paint I figured I'll go ahead and replace the bearings as they felt pretty nasty.

I'm having trouble removing the bearings from a stud, I don't know if they are supposed to be pressed off or are held in place by a small screw. The first pic shows one I have not tried to take apart, look at the bottom bearing, is that a Torx or something I just have not seen before? It kinds looks like a Torx but this is an old bandsaw and I would not expect to see a torx on it.

I tried a torx socket, I should have know better because it didn't feel right, it rounded out. Pic 2 shows it rounded out.

The last pic is the one I screwed up along with one I have not touched for comparison. I'm obviously pretty clueless when it comes to bearings and this kind of stuff but that bearing does not look like it's held in by the torx looking thing, but if it isnt then why is it there?

Any ideas how to remove these bearings from the studs?

What about the other bearing, the one above the torx looking one?

It almost looks like from your pictures that it's a broached hex and the **** in the bottom is just the trash left over from the broached metal being displaced ?? I can't tell for sure from the pictures The one with the slot cut into it appears to be the eccentric side

Get the torx screw out and then heat the whole area with a propane torch or mapp gas, Mount it in a vise whine doing this, Get 2 small pry bars or screwdrivers (that you dont like) and get the under the race and pry up, They should pop right off. This method is only to be used if you are replacing the bearings.

The guys over at Sawmill Creek would also have experience with stubborn bandsaw bearings and how to remove them, might be worth a post if the problem doesn't resolve quickly...

The torx part is the head of a "bolt". The bearing is mounted on this bolt. You need to remove the bolt from the saw, then press the bearing AWAY from the torx head, towards the threads.

Edit: I attached an image to clarify. B=bearing, S=stud.

It looks to be a stud mount bearing, which doesn;t come apart.
Look at http://www.mcmaster.com/ pages 1086-1091.

Using the hex and slots on yours, you should be able to remove the stud from the guide mount.
