I have this old vise that was my grandfathers from what I was told I assume it is about 100 years old. I've looked it over and there isn't any raised or engraved letters anywhere (except for the 84-4 on the "post" that is threaded for the screw). So I don't know who made it. Any ideas.
I'm going to restore it and need some help.
1. There is a split ring holding the handle & screw in place. I did try to pry it apart so I could get it out of the groove. It may be hardened as it does not spread easily. If I get it off (I could cut it with a dremel I think), how would I replace it? An appropriate size e-clip maybe?
2. I found a place that might sandblast it for me. They also offer powder coating. Would powder coating be a good choice or should it just be painted. If painted, is Rustoleum primer and then paint sufficient? Would it need clear coating too?
3. The jaws are just a little over 4 inches wide. Maybe 4 1/8". I didn't get an exact measurement. Would any jaws that are the same width match the screw holes? In other words, are they standardized? I doubt it but .....
4. I know I can get 1 screw out of the jaws and maybe 2. The others appear to be ruined (worn down with the jaws). I have a set of screw extractors and could possibly get them out. Should I attempt it? If I can't get new jaws, what would the point be to get these off?
Any and all help is welcomed.
