Hi all,

Been lurking on the forum for a while and decided I join up. This is my first post, so I goof something up or step out of line let me know.

I am working on restoring an old Craftsman/King Seeley 6 1/8" jointer (model 103.23900) and am having trouble locating replacement bearings. I have the tool in question up on Vintagemachinery.org http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=17787.

I know there are a few vintage craftsman guys on the site and am wondering if anyone might be able to point me in the direction of replacements. The bearings I removed are marked NDH 3202F-16. Listed in the manual published here on VM as part number 18236. I know NDH was owned by GM about the time these were produced, and I've found some NOS 3202 bearings on ebay. I'm not sure if the "F-16" at the end means they are different from the plain 3202 or if there might be a modern equivalent cheaper than the NOS parts (they want nearly $30 each).

I'm not sure how accurate my caliper is but the measurements I got were outside edge is 11mm wide, over all bearing width is 35mm, center opening is 15.5mm. here's a picture as well:

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried going to motionindustries.com and doing a search. They have an enormous selection of bearings and a good search engine.

Thanks all. Stonesfan68 started me on the right track with Motion Industries. I realized as I was looking that I mis-read 6202 as 3202...(that explains a little), then saw organ's post. Thanks for the links guys, ordering the new ones tonight. I appreciate the help.

That's a 6202 bearing. Any 6202 will work.

Not necessarily, I just found out the hard way when I ordered a set for my old Atlas dp refurb. The inner race is larger diameter on the old bearing than the new ones, they will not work in my case. I will post the og bearing number for reference later.

Well after a little debating last night I decided I'm going to punt (thanks for your comment nine4GMC...I put down the credit card and picked back up the dial caliper  ). My inside diameter measurement is slightly over 15mm but not quite 16mm. I measured the shaft as well with the same result. From what I'm seeing on Motion Industries and ebay the 6202 comes in both 15mm and 16mm inner diameter. So my plan right now is to order one of each of the cheapest ones off ebay to establish which of the two is going to fit at all or with the least amount of play before ordering higher quality bearings.

Granted there may be some differences in tolerances between the cheap-o ebay bearings and the ones from MI, but better to start somewhere (I've wasted $14 on dumber things :lol_hitti).

I'm not in a huge rush, rather take my time and do it right. I've got 3 parts bins full of rusted bolts and other hardware to hit with the wire wheel yet anyway. I made it through half a bin in 2 hours last night. At this rate I'll be ready to reassemble right after our wedding mid May  .

Thanks again guys. I'll post back once I have some progress made, along with some pics.

I haven't had any problems with ebay bearings :fingersx:

The ebay link I posted is a good deal. ~6 for 2 bearings and free shipping... and ships from the U.S.... most of the cheap ones on ebay are gonna ship from China... long wait.

That's actually what I did organ. I also ordered 2 6202 2RS (16mm inner diameter) that ships state side. Came to $14 and change. Could be the ebay bearings work great. My only hesitation is that I've learned the hard way to never trust an ebay wheel bearing. Obviously this is a lot different though.

Franklee, looking at the metric conversion chart that makes a whole lot more sense that it's 5/8ths (too much time working on foreign cars I guess :headscrat ). Explains why it was between 15mm and 16mm.

If I'm reading my metric to inch chart right, that would make it a 6202 ZZ 5/8" ID x 1-3/8 x 7/16 bearing correct? I'm going to forgo the metric ones for now and grab a couple of the standards. Here's what I found: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161269892511

Thanks again for all the help guys, it's been super helpful. Funny you mention the K-S. I actually just finished a 150 craftsman floor unit a week ago (though I skipped the bearings as it had no noticeable run out). It would make sense if King Seeley used the same bearing in both.

IIWY I'd send an online quote request to Accurate Bearings. While there you can cross reference your original and/or find a replacement per your measurements. Through your quote request Lynn @ Accurate will also do the same. She'll point you in the right direction.

I just purchased bearing from AB last month. Nothing but confidence that I was getting what I needed.

I always pull my bearings and take them to one of the many local places and they measure them. Maybe I'm spoiled because I'm in an industrial city.

The drill press was in the background of his pics on vintagemachinery in the link above.

I couldn't believe no one had mentioned it yet!

Thanks for all the help guys. I think it's pretty clear that Accurate Bearings is going to be my go-to place for bearings from here on out. FrankLee those part numbers and measurements were exactly what I needed. New bearings should be here tonight I hope. This is where I've gotten to so far on the big cast iron parts:

Still WAY more to do, but I'm down to only one more bin of parts left waiting for their date with the wire wheel. I know colorful stuff isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I needed a break from industrial gray. Speaking of which...

Steven67fr mentioned my drill press (that FrankLee pointed out shares the same bearing as the jointer). Oddly enough I started working on an old General Manufacturing belt driven grinder (to the right of the drill press) last weekend and guess what? It takes the same damn bearings!

One was wasted after I drove the shaft out (the pully was totally rust welded on :wtf:). Luckily one of the bearings I pulled out of the jointer was "good enough" to get it back together for the time being to use the wire wheel :bounce: (been using my old shopsmith up until now). Here's a little closer look at the grinder:

I wish I could say the little Packard motor is still on it (I put some time into those motor mounts), but it's been swapped for an old repulsion motor.

Anyway the moral of the story is I'm going to bulk buy the XF121PP bearings from Accurate Bearings (maybe 8 of them) later this month. As common as they seem to be in my shop I might as well keep them on hand. Thanks again guys.
