Need help with new thermostat!

I have a split unit with an air handler and a heat pump with electric heat. I had an old Honeywell Chronotherm III that went bad. So I went out and got a Honeywell RTH2510 which is compatible with a heat pump and Aux heat. I followed the wiring diagram in the instructions, turned the unit on and started smelling something burning, electrical wise, and immediately turned it off.
My old thermostat had terminals Y1 and W1 wired together and had a W2 wire.
I have attached pictures of my old and new thermostat wiring.
I dont understand what is wired wrong. Could someone help me please?

Thank you!

go through the installer set up its probably still set up for a gas furnace. if so and you set it to heat it would turn on just the auxiliary ( electric strip ) heater and would give you the smell you had.

Ok. I went through the setup booklet and it got to a part where is says "if your old thermostat had Y1, W1 and W2 wires, STOP NOW and contact a qualified contractor for help". I dont understand where the yellow wire connects to Y1 and W1 on the old thermostat base but on the new one I wouldn't be able to do that unless I put a jumper from Y to W/AUX. I'm just really confused, I'm sorry

Y1 is cooling and W1 is heat. We use to jump them together on thermostats to bring the compressor on during a call for heat. Looks wired correctly. When aux heat comes on there will be a smell.

Thanks everyone! Usually the smell that I smell was like a "heat" smell, I'm assuming from the heat strip heating up, but this time it was like wires burning or shorting out. I switched the new thermostat out for one that has a dedicated port for W2, unlike the other one. My actual AC unit is inop so I took out the Y1 wire. Now my blower fan constantly runs even after the room reaches temperature, so I have to figure out where its "shorted to power". Also the air, during the heat selection, doesnt seem to get very hot. It gets warm and eventually get the room to set temp but not like it use to, even when the AUX heat kicks in. Seems like the the heat strip is maybe halfway burned out or it's not getting the full power it needs?
Any thoughts or suggestions on what I can check for that?
I appreciate all yalls help
