Re: Need help with picking a vice

I've picked plenty of vice's thru the years. I've spent lots of money on wine, women and song. The rest I wasted.

You can spell it either way... the rest of the wold uses "Vice" only. USA uses Vise for the clamping tool and Vice for habbits/substances that have control over you.

For that price, I'd much rather buy a vintage US-made vise. I think (not sure) the lower-end Wilton stuff isn't US-made. You could get an old Starrett, Althol, Morgan, Parker, or Yost for less or the same money, and I'd bet it would be better.

If you look on CL you will find better vises than most made today and a fraction of the price. You can't beat the quality of an older USA made vise.

Good luck CL hunting, because the vises AREN'T out there in any kind of numbers.

The few decent vises I've seen in the Portland area have been purchased by like-minded individuals, only to have a crappy coat of paint applied and the price increased significantly.

Check out Yost vise, you can get USA made vise for that price, just watch, more and more imports are sneaking into their line. Northern has about the best price on them.
