Let me start by saying Im new to forum and Im not very experienced in carpentry. I recently decided i would insulate my 16x22 work shop. The rafters have me wondering what im going to do.. What i would like to do is add 2x6's on 24" centers about a foot about the top plate to increase my ceiling height and then insulate and hang osb. Is this going to be structurally sound with the weight of the osb. as of right now i only have a few rafter ties and and they sit on the plate. the garage is old but seems pretty square and sound.
I will add in hurricane ties to the rafters also. Please let me know what your thoughts are and if im heading in right direction. here are some pictures..dont mind the mess i have been moving everything off the walls to insulate.

Nice old building.
I will leave it to more experienced framers to correct me, but...
IMHO you plan would reinforce the existing building.

Yes its a good idea, they are called collar ties. First check the straightness the walls/roof before you put them up. Do front, then the back, chalk a line between the two.
