I have a 5yr old and 7yr old sons that have a habit of "barrowing" my tools. Well I am tired of them getting lost and thing they are old enough now to have their own tools. Let them lose their own tools. So I spent 2 hours tonight tring to piece together a nice little starter set for them :shocking:(See below for what I pieced together). The problem is I would like to keep it under or around $50. I seem to remember their used to be kits out there for around that price point. I think my first set of tools was made by Altrade or something like that. Do you guys know of something out their that would fit that bill. Would love to find something that comes with a light wieght case with molded drawers.

I figure they will be using the tools for working on their bikes, scooters, toys (after they break them ofcourse) etc. So take a look below and let me know if there is a better option out there.

Here is what I pieced together. I am not so sure how hot I am on the evolve brand of Craftsman but the price was right and quality looks okay, still carries lifetime.

6pc Craftsman Evolv Screwdriver set $8
00910067000-1

5pc Craftsman Evolv Plier set $12
00910047000-1

42pc Tool Set $22 (On Clearance)
00933042000-1

All going in this bag
12in Larger Mouth Zippered Tool Bag $5
00940947000

What do you think?

I think youre a bad *** parent... that aside i cant imagine theyd need much else for what you listed. If you wanna be a super nice dad you can get them an oscilloscope, they wont understand it but its so fun to mess with as a kid (had a used one).

maybe a spoke wrench too if you're feeling adventurous.

The chalk and chalk reel look like the most fun!!

P.S. don't forget to give them a little safety coaching

Throw a pair of safety glasses for each kid into the bag, and tell them to use them!! I told my dad I wanted a new porter cable circle saw for Christmas, but then, I'm also 34.haha

Don't forget a hammer. I'm still using the light weight hammer I got when I was 8.

You could probably do it even cheaper at HF (I just got a set of screw drivers for free), but I'm sure the Evolv set will last them much longer.

I like the idea of the safety glasses. I got my daughter a small set this year. She is 5 and likes to help me out in the garage. I grabbed a "lil helper" set at Lowes for about ten bucks. It comes with a hammer, couple screw drivers, adjustable wrench and a few pair of pliers. It also comes with glasses and a tool bag. I know the stuff is not as good as my Snap On, Matco, or Craftsman stuff, but she's 5, she can generate any kinda power yet. I am gonna wait a couple more years and start getting her some legit tools, a little at a time.

I too have started piecing together a set for my son, he's 14 weeks old. He got my old Beta cantilever box.

He has a cheap 1/4" socket set, a 4" Bahco adjustable wrench, tiny pliers I found cheap and some of my old screwdrivers and 4-10mm wrenches I had from old sets. I also found him an old plastic work bench with a little plastic vise and a 9V drill press.

The first toolbox my son had was my first box, a barely used Craftsman 3 drawer, two latch, handle box with basic 1/4 socket sets, screwdrivers, and pliers. Worked great for many years until he outgrew that and "upgraded" to a roller 2-piece chest (if you can call it that) that came with cheap tools from Target or Wal-Mart that used to sell for ~$100. Most recently he got handed down my old Husky 26" lower/upper box and continues to add to his tool collection. It is great to see your kids grow up and learn how to use and take care of tools, and he'll have what he needs when he has to start driving and working on his own car in the next year or two :) I think you're on the right path in your selection.

Looks like a good set to start out with. But like others I would add safety glasses, ear plugs or muffs and a small hammer. Vaughn makes an small claw hammer, would allow him to swing a hammer like dad does cause of the light weight.
