Need help with tool id...

Years ago I had what I thought may have been a heat gun. Unfortunately it got "donated" in a box of other junk. I would like another for a project I have in mind.

It looked like an old space movie ray gun. The handle was plastic and it had a chamber on top that was shaped almost like a football. When you pulled the trigger the front of the "football" had a hinged flap that opened and a very bright light came on. Seemed like it may have been aircraft related based on where I got it, and the way it opened/operated seemed like it would work on heat shrink for wire splices.

No, it used light for the heat source, not a coil heating element. To be honest, I am guessing at its use. But I do know it got hot, I can't remember what type of light it was.

Weller 6966? I can't say I see the resemblance to a football, but it's the only heat gun I'm familiar with that has a different kind of look about it.

Do a search for Raychem Heat Gun. They made a few different styles of infrared heat guns. Some look like ray guns.

Plenty of options out there for everything from heat shrink, paint removal and even light soldering/brazing.
Why chase after that particular model?

Perhaps it was a novelty flameless lighter. They make all sorts of those and the flame looks like a bright light.

I am an aviation electrician by trade. When I was stationed in San Diego working on the C-2, I found this "heat gun". I made it into a ray gun. I polished the metal bits, metal flaked and cleared the plastics bits, it was ******* rad. I had plans to mount it, but before I did it faced the same fate as things that sit around too long in a house with a spouse that purges things frequently. I went to Goodwill. As I approach retirement in a few days, I would like to remake it. And maybe actually mount it this time.

So definitely not a toy nor did it remind me of any heat gun I have ever used.
