Everyone at work uses the white paste we stock to lubricate brake pads when installing them. It's very clingy and makes the drawers operate smoothly. My Cornwell box is lubed with that stuff, and is on a slightly un-level surface. When you let go of a drawer full of 150 lbs. of tools, it glides shut and latches gently just from gravity. Smoooth. :D

I'd use either that, or a dab of wheel bearing grease. Think this way: What do you lube the ball bearings on a car with? Wheel-bearing grease, right? ;)

And yeah, everything on a snap-on box is warrantied, except for the paint along the front-bottom edge where floor soap and steel-toe boots can damage it. I know a guy who got a new box because the powdercoat started flaking SLIGHTLY at one corner after six months of daily use. :D

They'll replace locks, casters, gas struts... you name it. :)

thanks but i tried to make deal with snap on dealer for 1000.00 dollars but he said it is good shape and only is box is sit too long and have lot of dust on it. he said 1,200 is good deal as he will sell it more to other people but he know that i pay more to paid off soon as i want to. so i had to bought used box because snap on guy said it still had lifetime warranty on anything that i have problems. so i go ahead bought it on monday as he did come in on monday as he always come in friday but when i told him that i will buy it then he already go to pick up and bring it to my work in few hours later.

which you prefer buy used box for 1,200 dollars or 4,460 dollars for new box but both still get same lifetime warranty. also i dont care if it get dirty on used box because it is old and it already used than being so worry about new box that get dirty or chip on it. also i was notice that i got lot more space to fill up what i really need tools for today and future.

Larz, thanks you... also they said go buy used box as i can save myself money. they just like to have new box and have a good values on it instead used box. i am care about my toolboxes and have recipt for my toolboxes in drawers to proof that i paid and owner of it. the important that i need is lifetime warranty on my toolboxes so if i have problem then it will replacement by snap on dealer.

some of tech in next door have very old toolboxes and they dont buy any tools to fix vehicles because they do their speciality. I am really want be master tech in dealership to fix all kind of works.

Nothing wrong with having a used box, you saved a pile of money on it and if you put a scratch on it (hard not to do) you won't be pissed off.

To me if its straight as an arrow, no dents, all drawers slide perfect and is almost in excellent paint condition I'd buy it

Congrats again

everything on my used snap on chest is good shape and slides are good conditions but i noticed that it need little lube on it so i had spray the silicone lube on it. it starting to slide more smooth but i want make sure if i use right lube . so thanks again.

also i will post my toolbox that i have today. in my work as two of my tech friends have too wides box but i have too tall toolbox as save myself of space for shop. i dont really need too wide toolbox as bench. one tech of my friend was complaint that he cant write the paper on his old snap on box (26in wide combo (chest and bottom) so he decided to trade in for bigger box then now he had many drawers empties. i was plan to tell him that he dont need 72in wide as he only need 54in wide bottom toolbox. but it is his choice and his money. i make myself a decide for toolbox that why i decided buy used so i dont worry about stratch or dirty on it.

I'm with your buddies. I prefer a long, wide box with a stainless top and a hutch on top of it. I hate the narrow tall setups... but some guys, like you, prefer them. They're definitely cheaper when you stay with a 2-bay and go tall.

By the end of '07, I'll be in a 3-bay Matco, I hope. My 58" wide Cornwell is packed to the gills. :)

My favorite thing about a wide box with a hutch, is that when it's 4:59 and you KNOW they're looking for someone to do an alignment (read: stay late for 45 minutes)... and you're racing the other guys out the door... you always win. While everyone else is putting stuff away drawer by drawer, you just slide all your greasy tools to the back, and lock the slide-down door. They can wait until the morning.

I don't have a hutch on my current box, so I get to stay late a lot. :D

Something like this is what I'd like to be in a couple of years down the road:

Tnt you just answered my question of why people like hutches. I never could see spending the money for one. So what does a Matco 3 bay box cost new? I don't have a matco dealer and I can't find a price on their website.

my tech friend had trade in his three bay Performance toolbox(matco) for four bay 86in wide and matco tool dealer said hutch is free if bought the bottom 86in wide toolbox. it was on matco flier before. i am 6'5" and will hit the top of hutch unless i bend my legs a little then no problem. i rather have chest as i can dump all my tools on top of chest and closed my snap on chest's lid and locked then go. i dont use any on my top of chest but only prybars..... so i can dump tools in and locked it.

but most time i got done before 5pm so i have time to clean all my tools that i used today and put where it supposed to go. then i was inspection all drawers to make sure no tool are missing while i was work because sometime tech come and pick up my tool from my toolbox without tell me BUT they left my tools on my cart where i was working. sometime they just take it and put it back where it was before....

i have to keep watch on my tools to make sure i had it before i locked my toolboxes.

They have a lot of other advantages:

They free up a lot of drawer space because you get quite a bit of pegboard on the sides to hang things from, but it can still be locked up. Two drawers worth of tools you grab all the time (3/8 and 1/2 drive metric impact sockets, 2 sets of wrenches, you impacts and air ratchet, etc) get hung up there, and they're out of your drawers.

You have a spot to stick a flourescent light directly above your work/writing area. All your loose paperwork won't blow around on a windy day with the shop doors open. Easy to have a small boom box at work, but still lock it up. At lunch, you drop what you're doing and lock up your current work order, parts, and tools... and just go to lunch. Come back and roll up the door.

I could probably cite a bunch of other reasons, but those are the highlights. :)

So what does a Matco 3 bay box cost new? I don't have a matco dealer and I can't find a price on their website.
The bigger boxes aren't even listed on their website. I've got all the boxes prices scribbled in the margins of my catalog at work, but don't expect a big discount compared to snap-on. They're pretty much toe-to-toe when it comes to pricing. I'll try to remember to post some prices Monday. I believe the one above is about $11K if you bought it new off the truck for list price. Without the hutch.

I actually prefer Matco boxes to Snappys. Pull all the drawers out of both, and the Snap-On is a bit shaky, since the drawers are a large part of it's structural support. Look at the matco I posted a pic of, and there's a 1" wide frame between the bays. It reduces drawer space slightly, but it makes for a very rigid box. I also think Matco's drawer slides are smoother.

Yeah. They had a deal 3 months back where you got a free top hutch if you bought a box. I believe you couldn't mark down the price of the box to get that deal (no haggling)... but it still backed up their toolbox plant for three months. It was pretty popular.

To each his own. That's why they make so many different styles of box. One of the guys at work is 6'3" and has a Matco 7525 with a hutch. He had the same problem with the hutch being too short.

Now he's got 3" thick aluminum spacers between the casters and the bottom of the box to give it a bit of a lift. Works great. He just had to source some longer bolts. :)

I work with about 15 guys and there is only one guy that borrows tools. He is bad about not returning them but after a couple of times of bitching at him he borrows from the other guys. Most of the guys leave their tools laying out and don't bother putting them away. I would hate to say how much money in tools they loose each year.

oh yeah my tech friend did bought about 12,000 dollar plus taxes then had to wait for about one month to get bottom box arrive then wait for hutch for almost 3 months to arrive then wait for free cover that fit whole toolbox as wait since he bought from dealer as total about 5 months to get whole toolboxes set in his place at dealership. he dont really happy about it but he was glad that he have enough space to fill more tools. i bought used bottom box from same snap on dealer and he brought bottom box in my work same day i bought it one year ago then i decided bought used snap on chest one on monday and snap on guy did brought chest in few hours later as same day i was happy to have all thing set same day instead wait for next day.

i was noticed that i bought more tools from snap on guy than other tool truck because one reason is snap on guy come in on friday. i was in ivy tech on tuesday and thursday. mac tool guy come in on tuesday. i was try stay away from mac tools because mac tool sell tawain tools but still sell usa made tools. i was noticed that mac tools get more problems with people about FCC.

So the larger matco boxes are higher than snap on? I have a snap on krl1022 and it is way too small and can't decide whether to add a side box and maybe a top box or just trade it in on a bigger box.

that different stories when you work in shop with more than 5 techs in same shop as i only have two techs in my work as two techs and i in chrysler and jeep dealership and next door as had three techs in mercury and lincoln shop (my dealership sell chrysler, jeep, mercury, and lincoln..... that mean have two shop in seprate.

one tech that i never work with before as he took 1,500 dollar tool that make tech can look in cylinder head while look in spark plug ports. then he just put in his toolbox and never come back. the tech who own that 1,500 dollars did report to service manager about it and service manager fired tech for steal tool and found out his past jobs was fired because steal the tools in preivous shops.

snap on had biggest toolbox than matco tools as matco tool only sell up to 86in wides. snap on sell over 100 in wides toolboxes but remember bigger tool box are more money. one tech and service manager of mine own KRL1004 ( double of KRL1001 toolboxes) he said he paid 13,000 dollars and he said to me : "forget about bigger toolbox because it dont make money...: so i just keep my KRL1001 and snap on chest that same size of my KRL1001. i am save myself of hassles and money than my two tech friends doing.

I'm not sure who's more expensive. My point was just taht you shouldn't expect to get the same size box from Matco for $2K less, just because it doesn't say Snap-On on it. ;)

I'll see if I can get you some prices on Monday.

If I eventually get a bigger house, or a barn/shed, like at my brothers farm, I plan on building a frame (pit cart), for the shop. I am gonna use all my Craftsman bases, and give it a stainless/galvanized (metal) top. It will end up as about a 40" deep, 4 sided table/workstation, that will have the normal cars/garage on one side, and the shop and toys on two others.

Now if I could just win the powerball, :lol_hitti
