What do I need to make my hydraulic shop press work with air pressure? I would like to use a foot switch along with my air compressor, leaving both hands free.

Air/hydraulic jacks are on sale right now at Princess Auto (Canada). You should be able to switch your out for little cash.

Air alone will never give you the pressure you need.
Air assist to get it to the start pt,. But that's all . Not at all necessary for a press.
Push bearings and what not on and off will require min of 3000 lbs pressure and that will not be enough for some stufffffffffffffffffffffffff

The foot pedal is a great idea but thumper is right that air alone might help you as much as you think.

I converted my 50 ton press to air over hyd. I used
a 10,000 psi treddle hyd pump from Northern Tool,
about $300 made by the old BlackHawk outfit.

I could have used it as a foot operated, but chose to
mount it on the side so the original hose would work.

Here's a couple pics.

Here's a couple more pics. I used hvy dty quick
connects so I could switch between the original
hand pump, and the air pump. It lets me do small
delicate work when needed. The air over works great,
very fast acting, and will pump up to the 50 ton
max of my unit. The press is a Grizzly I bought on
sale several yrs ago. I used an old Hurst shifter to
operate the pump.

Enerpac makes a foot operated air over hyd pump that will reach 10,000 psi. Very nice pumps but brand new they can be a bit pricy.http://www.jackxchange.com/products/PA-133.cfm
The air is pumps into a piston which ups the ratio to give the high psi in hydraulics.
Enerpac pumps, Lincoln pumps just to name a few use this concept. Some are as high as 140/1 ratio.
