Need impact sockets looking for suggestions. I'm in school to become a diesel mechanic I'm working in a fleet truck shop looking to build my box up. I predominantly work on Mack trucks looking to get metric and standard what kits should I look at?

Been doing this professionally since 96 and I stick with grey pneumatic from here on out. Very affordable and they are great quality. I would also take a look at their duo sockets.

I have nothing but good results with my Carlyle impact sockets from NAPA. Affordable and local warranty.

You can't go wrong with Sunex, Grey Pneumatic, Gearwrench or Williams Taiwan if going with import (Taiwan) sockets with no skipped sizes. Any will last a lifetime of shop use and abuse. I've been using a bit of each professionally with zero issues.

You didn't mention a budget but if you want USA SK are fairly decent and they have the easy read number.

Sunex or Grey Pnuematic for standard impact sockets. Better brand for swivels, I have had little luck with the Sunex (I believe) that Cornwell had rebranded for their BluePower budget line. Pin comes loose and locks up, I've had to have several sockets replaced, many after only a few uses. Matco/Armstrong pinless is highly regarded, Snap On has some new lower profile ones. I've heard good things about Mac. You have discount opportunities with all the truck brands for those while a student (if you can afford it). It's worth going truck with the swivels because those are the ones that break.

Hell, you could use the HF for the time being and be all in for something like $45 and then wait to see if you can get a good deal on a truck brand for warranty sake.

I know im playing chicken little a bit but would you really want HF sockets on the end of some of the impacts used on heavy equipment?

I use the 1/2" Pittsburgh Pro just fine they are pretty close to Grey Pnuematic. I endorse these. Nearly three years of daily use in a heavy equipment shop and they are fine

I also use the 3/4 drive with a new strong 3/4 IR 2235 but some report negative results. My set is fine but I know Ruger556 said he has had them explode on him.

The Pro hex bits are good too. I've had good luck with their extensions and adapters (reducers are trash though)

I agree with the people pushing the HF 1/2" impact sockets. I have them, and they are fine. I have not broken any.

The problem with the HF sets, is that they skip sizes. I filled my sets with singles from Napa and other auto parts stores. I bet that if I did the math, it would have been cheaper to buy Sunex or Grey Pneumatic.

That said... with 20% off coupons (and a carful of friends with more 20% off coupons), you can have a good start for very cheap. I think they are one of the best deals at HF, and I have zero regrets about them.

I'm looking to offload a complete set of the HF Pittsburgh Pro impact sockets:

SAE & Metric, deep & shallow, Torx, and SAE & Metric hex sets.

I'll let them go dirt cheap. All brand new and never used.

PM me for details if interested.

If your working on Mack trucks then the obvious answer is Mac tools.

Seriously you are in school dont break the bank. Buy affordable tools now and upgrade once your out making money, and for those who think that's a waste you can always use the old stuff at home.

Not only does HF skip sizes but they are also kind of thick compared to my Snap On sockets. So they occasionally don't fit in some areas when the need to.

I got my SO sets used for less than half of the new cost. That being said I am not a fan boy. Whatever you can get a good deal on that is good quality. No one usually cares what brand you use as long as what you have will do the job at hand.

I bought wright sockets impacts, 1/2 drive 1/2 to 1 1/4 and Metric, 13mm to 32 mm. and 3/4 drive 3/4 to 2". Solid well made, I like that they are stamped and not lazser etched. USA made, quality.

I like my snapon on vs my sunex. Snap on is thinner for the majority of the socket. Sunex chokes down at the bolt head
