OK, I have a shop that consists of two areas, a 34x28 deep front large 3 car shop, that used to be a work area. I added a 50x50 shop to the rear/attached which is now the work area. I am in the process of cleaning up the current shop and want it be a nice display area for two cars and a hang out area.

In any case I have a large bank of custom made cabinets that are made out of wood. I painted them years ago red and its never looked great. Yesterday I decided to use some epoxy primer for automotive use and shoot a cabinet door. It looked fine so this AM I shot one door Viper red, which matches a metal electrical vault in this garage and also matches my vert cuda. I DO MY OWN BODY AND PAINT WORK AND THIS VIPER RED ppg dcc SINGLE STAGE IS LEFT OVER. I AM DOING THIS 26 FOOT WALL OF CABINETS and a couple of other smaller cabinets.

#1: How do you think it looks, here is a shot it in the paint booth. Good enough? I didnt want to have to spend a fortune for new cabinets when these work great. My plans are to take all the doors off and shoot them the same color and while they are off, to shoot the frames in an epoxy primer and then shoot them a metallic silver, which is very bright like metal, which is my goal. Black wont work as we have black widow spiders here and they get lost in my black trim and I hate that!!!!

#2: After they are all done I want to add some door knobs or hardware that has a HOTROD appeal, any suggestions???

I am trying to make it look nice on a budget as most of us are.

any suggestions are appreciated.

front shop cabinets

cabinets needed restoration. They are approx 26 feet of very large cabinets.

A done cabinet door. Literally I have 30 minutes into this. I did a quick 180 sanding job on the old paint, them hit it with 320 and then epoxy primer last night. This was a test cabinet. Then this AM. TWO coats of PPG DCC, (THAT’S A SINGLE STAGE WITH CLEAN BUILD IT AND I NO LONGER USE THAT ON VEHICLES OR GAS PUMPS) and let it dry. It could look a lot nicer should I have chosen to spend hours after shooting a fill coat of primer (more $$$) sand for hours, ect. You get the point.

I'd say the newly painted doors look very good for as little work you put into them. I have never had much luck with metalic paints on wood but maybe with a good primer (and sprayed with a gun) it will turn out better than I have done.

As far as the handles/knobs go anything in chrome would give it a nice hotrod look. Also if you wanted to do something different you could use wrenches and just put spacers behind them and use that as a handle.

Looking for some hardware suppliers

I would say look at your local big box also, or if you want something to look a little more "hot rod" check out ebay and see if you can't get some vintage chrome knobs or handles. Lots of options to look through there and you can probably find some unique bargains.

EDIT: These are pricey but if you could find something similar they look pretty hotrod to me and would match your cabinets.

I've seen lots of interesting cabinet draw pulls some of the ones I liked enough to remember
Spider gears welded to a bolt that spaced them out far enough to be comfortable.
Wrenches/ Sockets/ mini ratchet welded same as the spider gears.
Dash pull from old Ford HeadLight controls
Shift knobs ("T" handles work really well.)
Motorcycle chain welded in to a C for the doors , looped and pinned into a tight circle for drawer pulls. Seen it done with a Timing chain as well.
large hardware 1"+ stuff nut run to the head of the bolt welded to a smaller bolt to fit the drawer.
My personal fav was custom done, Mini BRM wheels 2" with a scale knockoffs to match his car. The knock offs held the wheel to the drawers.

Small wrenches with bolts tig welded to the backside look pretty good.

I would think you could stick a carriage bolt through a socket into a door as a knob too.

I have always liked the door knobs I saw made from B&S lawnmower engine valves.
They were a bit of a project to make.
You had to cut off and then thread the valve stems.
And you only got 2 per engine.

But where I saw them was a small engine shop and he had plenty of them.
If you are into V8’s you could get 16 at a shot.

I saw someone had taken wrenches, welded a stud on, and used an old socket as a spacer.

Old rocker arms would be neat. You should be able to get a bunch of them from the junk yard or the machinist shop.
