Have you tried calling places like Crenshaw Lumber in Gardena or Ganahl Lumber in Anaheim? Both have other locations but those are ones I know. I'm sure they could get them. If not could you order rough sawn 1x6 x8 redwood board and make them yourself?

They have them (some selection) at home depot. Not cheap. He wants finished product though. The problem is that lumber "products" (finished goods) are somewhat standardized. If a place offers them they probably finish them on site so they can end up being much more expensive. They have standardized finished product in 6 foot; I wonder if they don't make them in 8 foot because warpage might be too high.

Warpage stop Home Depot? Never. I've cut the straps on lumber in-store and watched it twist right in front of me. No kidding. At HD's price points I doubt the mills can afford to properly dry anything.

I suspect the reason 8 footers are hard to come by is that in general, around here, the maximum legal height for a residential fence is 6 feet.

Have you tried Oromill Lumber? Off of Whittier Blvd near Hadley. Good people there.
