Need Motivation!

I have a serious case of the winter blues....
I have some projects I want to finish in the house before it gets nice and I can get started in the garage/barn.
One project being building shelves and organizing the basement.
The plan is to build two racks with 3 shelves. 2ft by 4 ft long.
right now I am going to build a 2ft x 4ft frame and attach 2ftx4ft plywood over that for the shelves. Then just screw 6ft 2x4's to the ends for legs.

should this work well? any reinforcing?

Feel free to post up some pics of your wood built shelves for some motivation for me.

What is the thickness of the plywood? I think you'll be OK. Spring is coming...

The best motivation for getting a project done around the house is get your friend, family member etc that doesn't know a hammer from a prybar to start the project for you....

After about 5 minutes of watching them struggle with it and cobble it up, you will jump right in to help them and before you know it, it will be done. And you will have done a good deed by being a teacher to the less skilled student good luck

Gregtwojeeps - So that's what live in girlfriends are for!! I always got upset because they started projects they can't finish... But it was always something I didn't care about! haha

I just want to feel accomplished in the house when spring comes and I move outside.
need - House cleaned, basement organized and bathroom door and trim finished

I'll lend you my wife (don't get any funny ideas). She rides my *** until I can't take it anymore. Or, pay someone to do it. When you get the estimate you'll be working before you know it. Both of these are my wife's ploys. It works for me!!!

I can buy metal rack shelves of good quality pretty cheap. Why don't you go get a couple and clean your basement ? Set the alarm for whatever time you get up on a work day, and get dressed for work on Saturday morning and get going ?

A plan and a schedule are what you need. Make a plan, get a list, set a time, and get started. Don't wait for motivation or over think this.

Move a muscle, change a thought. Do SOMETHING, even if it is just to get in the car and look at something you are pretty sure you don't want.

Feel free to post up some pics of your wood built shelves for some motivation for me.

As a Carpenter, I would double up the 2x4 legs with blocking under each shelf, made solid down to floor, as additional support. Kind of like the jack studs in door and window framing. This supports the weight on solid wood instead of just relying on the sheer strength of whatever screws you are using.(Unless it is just a very lightly loaded shelf.) Some may call it overkill, but I have never had anything I built collapse!

I f you could buy some decent shelving would it motivate you faster if you're dreading the construction of some shelving ? Some of the big box stores carry shelving units.

Instead of spending time making it or putting it off for that reason, go buy some.

i like the idea of setting the alarm and getting ready for a work day.
i might have to go to menards. they seem to have a better selection of storage shelving.
I used some Muscle Racks from Lowes in the garage. not too bad.
I will come op with a plan tonight and get it down tomorrow. I thought about building them so they will be 24in deep. most racks seem shallow

Menard's has a collection of shelving on their site. That was just one of the first that came up with a "low to high price" sort.

I like the get up and get working on the house just like any other work day thing too. If you've been working on the house since 0600, it drastically reduces the chances of getting nagged at for beer drinking later in the day.

Thanks guys!! set the alarm for 8:00 got up and dressed immediately and out the door to the store. Menards is 30 mins away from me.
bought 96in tall racks.... oops... had to go back for 72 in racks.

I like these but they are pricey. almost $200 for 72in H 6ft wide 30in deep.

but I like them.
Still have more cleaning and organizing to do in the basement. setting up a work table and plumbing storage.
