Need new column for drill press

I have an OLD craftsman drill press, bench top model. They just don't make them like this anymore. Problem is, the column had rusted quite a bit so I am now looking to buy a replacement. I guess I will first try some serious rust removal, but the column is pitted in spots so I don't know how smooth the action will be. If I buy a new column I will convert it to a floor model by bolting the existing stand to a piece of steel or aluminum plate. Where does one source a column for these things? I have googled, but to no avail. (I know I need to get the diameter of the column first). What rust preventative should be used on these that will allow full and easy movement and no rust accumulation.

I don't have an answer for the column, but I use car wax to keep bare metal surfaces shiny. It sticks around longer than oil on vertical surfaces and doesn't attract all the dust.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I will make some calls tomorrow if I get a chance. Ed- thanks for the craftsman suggestion. It turns out that I am a member since 2002 (i guess I either never got, or threw out the card so haven' used it and never got any notice of sales) though they were about to remove my name for lack of use. Elroy, I will check into those links. I am really happy I came across this forum when I did. It always amazes me that there are so many people that can collectively pool their knowledge in a positive way to help each other out. I only hope that I can contribute in the future.
