Looks like mother nature has got the best of one of my garage doors. The doors are made of wood and the bottom of one is rotting due to moisture. It is a 15 x 8 wood door that actually looks like the bottom slat was replaced at one time(probably due to moisture). The rest of the door is good condition but needs the constant yearly paint/maint. I've basically come to the decision that it is time to replace the door. The door even bows a bit....
The other door is 10x 8 and matches color and pattern wise. So if I replace one, might as well replace both.

Here are my questions:

1. Vinyl, Steel or wood composite - whats best???
2. Reputable companies in Northern NJ/Hudson County
3. Cost on two middle of the road doors, any estimates?
4. How long does installation typically take?? (Have nowhere to put the Vette)

Any addtnl info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for your time

I bought two 10x8 white, "in stock" steel doors at Home Depot for under $300 each. As long as you're not looking for something fancy, they're not overly expensive.

As for question 4, it only takes a few hours for a pro to do an installation. Ordering a door, waiting for it to come in, and then waiting for them to schedule your job, these things can take weeks. Months if things aren't going your way.

15 x 8 is an odd size, usually they are 16 wide may want to double check it. If it is 15 chances are it will need to be ordered which generally takes 3 weeks for my dist. I would say steel is the way to go, less maint., they can be insulated, and it is what most are installing. They do make vinyl but they cannot be painted and are usually 3 times as much as a steel door. You should be able to get both doors for under 1800 including installation and tax.

Call around and get 3 or 4 estimates and make sure they give you all the prices including tax, installation, and disposing of existing doors. Don't forget the vinyl trim around the doors also we include it when removing a wood door for an insulated steel.

The vette should be fine it won't take them 5-6 hours once they show up.

garage doors

i used The Overhead Door Company - they are popular down here in FL, but i'm not sure about the NE. I went with vinyl over wood for durability and upkeep. Paneled doors come out on a pickup in pieces and are assembled in one day. i had 3 doors (1 double & 2 singles) assembled in 1/2 day. hope that helps.

BTW, I used United Overhead Door out of Yonkers, NY. (http://www.uniteddoor.com) I don't know if they go into New Jersey. I found the hardware they use is heavier duty than most, and they had the ability to do some "custom" work on the tracks to make everything fit just right with a low ceiling.

Good info all around

I made some calls today in regards to estimates. United Door does not service my part of NJ even though I told them they were highly recommended. I then called the only two companies that seem to service my area. One said( Garage Inc.) to go with the steel door, it is less expensive and comes with a lifetime warranty. I also asked about the vinyl doors that look like barn doors - get ready - $3800 for the small door and upwards of $5000 for the big one. Looks like it will be steel for me.

The other company (Elite Door) didn't really discuss price but also recommended the steel door. I have appts for estimates Thurs and Friday morning..

I'll let everyone know how much they want bang me over the head..

Thanks

Go for the thicker steel door, ie. better insulation value. I think mine is 2" Clopay. Helps keep the garage 20 degrees warmer in the winter.

Heres the $$$$$$$$$$$

Had two estimates done --- heres the verdict,

Estimate 1

- one 15 x 7.6 Amarr Summit garage door, double layer, 25 gauge steel with interior layer of polystyrene insulation - r val - 5.65. Window accents and hardware - handles and straps, Almond - looks like barn doors

one 10 x 7.6 Amarr Summit garage door, same as above

two Chamberlain Liftmaster Estate Series garage door openers.
They are belt driven with torsion bars and all the bells and whistles

Included is removal of old doors and garage door opener, new tracks/rails, weatherstripping, full installation and delivery

Price - $3100

Estimate 2

For two door w/o insulation, 1 ply the same as above $4000 no garage openers.

I am going with estimate one obviously. .....Thanks to everyone for their help

The Oak Summit is a very nice looking door, much better than the regular raised panel. Amarr makes a great product. Very good price too, you are going to love how quiet those openers are.
