Need pliers for opening lids...

My wife has to open a metal can of glue (Barge) with a 1.75" metal lid pretty much every day.

It glues itself on and I have to use the vice or something to get it off. The can is big so it's got plenty of torque. But the lid is only 1.75" and you need something to grab it with leverage.

Do you guys think these would work well?

Or do you have another (cheaper?!) suggestion? The oil filter pliers at HF don't seem to work on less than 2" diameter, so I guess those are out.

I haven't tried the channellock filter wrench on lids (great idea!) but i will say that like all their pliers, the quality is great.

They are also nice in that the handles are short in order to fit in tight spots on vehicles. Assuming you don't need insane amounts of torque, the smaller form factor should be nice too.

Also intrigued by the idea to use vaseline. I'd love for that to work on cans of PVC cement. But it seems like there's potential for that to be messy?

I want to try the vaseline now. Do you think it will work on PVC cement? I always need to use my pliers to get them opened.

After you've removed the lid the first time, why not use a rubber or plastic plug to seal the opening or some plastic food wrap. I'd just put the lid upside down over the opening If I was going to be using the glue most days.

Opening glue can everyday.....hummm. Red flag, red flag. Let's not help her open it. Let's help her keep it closed.

10 inch Knipex Cobras should work fine. They have a push button locking jaw setting; therefore she won't need to adjust them every time.

How about the rubber strap wrenches? no mashing of the lid this way. How stuck are the lids?

The Vaseline idea sounds promising too I will have to see how that works on some other sticky compounds' lids.

I thought about that under counter thing. But if I get that, she won't need ME anymore! :)

The 460's won't work because she'll just crush the lid so it won't seal tight anymore. Been there, done that!

Those GL10's look like they'd do the job for 5 bucks less! I might go with those!

And no, she's not sniffing glue, especially Barge! Yuck! We run a leather (no, not the ***** stuff you're imagining now!) crafts business out of our home and she makes new product most every day.

And that's why we really didn't want to use the Vaseline trick. There's just too much of a chance that it might get on an expensive piece of leather.

So thanks for the input everyone! I might get the little oil filter wrench AND the GL10 and see which works best. No reason not to buy both! :)
