So, I'm looking to get a vise and a stand. I won't use it much, but I do know that it will come in very handy. I'm thinking of just picking up a vice from HF and getting a stand off Amazon. Not looking for anything fancy, just something that will work decently. Originally I was thinking of attaching it to an old wheel or something but at this point I think I'd be best off bolting it to the floor. Here's the stand I'm looking at:

And the vise:

Sure you don't want to mount it to a work bench? When you have to bend something in the vise or hold a piece to be wrenched or worked on, that grinder stand will probably move too much even bolted down. Maybe not though.

Though I do wish I had a stand like that (or an original Craftsman one) for my block grinder.

Don't buy a Horror freight vise..... I bought one some time back and the threads on the movable jaw stripped out in less than a week, and I had not even used it very hard.... :shocking: :scared: :scared:

the top plate on that stand is probably way too thin. My HF vise worked for years, but I got a couple Wiltons anyway. Sometimes I bolt one to a brake rotor, and I can use it on my tailgate, or float around the bench top. Might be a way to decide where you like it.

a vise needs to be mounted solid to a bench fastened to the wall or it wont be very useful. And if you can't afford a $1000.00 vise a $50.00 vise will get you buy for a good long time. Vises are very expensive, keep your eyes open for a used one. Most people do not knwo the value of a good vise or a good anvil so they can be bought cheap on Craigslist or similar sites.

Id try to find the biggest heavy truck drum or wheel you could. Wide footprint + heavy.

Drop in anchors are a possibility too if it will rarely be moved.

Or- attach to lift column with a weldment then bolted to the column.

I started with this.....

Went to this and have the same set up on my carport. I merely welded the set up to one of the 4 X 4 tubes holding up my hoist. I do not like to "beat" anything that is in a bench mounted vice. **** seems to fall from everywhere and my benches are...substantial ! ......

Now one is stationary, on either side of pole/beam, and I can beat/pound/bend anything without stuff falling from shelves or being limited by space. The other vice can be moved around to where ever I need the help.......................

I find myself using the vice on the 'ol Harbor Freight wooden table as well....

Last and least...the small vice on my main work bench comes in handy for small stuff....

I bought one of the HF stands and bolted it to the floor. Will most likely go pick up another one tomorrow along with a grinder and a vise. If I find it doesn't work for my needs I'll change the setup. ***** you can only use one 20% off coupon per visit.

I'll also throw a +1 for the Central Electric 1/2" hammer drill. Used a 1/2" masonry bit to drill the holes in the concrete. Worked excellent, especially for 35 bucks. I was tempted to get the cheaper Drill Master one for 21 dollars, but it was rated for 4 amps whereas the Central Electric one was 7.2. Definitely a much heavier duty drill than the Drill Master one.

At this point I'm debating on a little different setup for the stand with the grinder on it. I know for sure the one that has the vice mounted to it needs to be bolted to the floor so it doesn't move around when hitting or bending things. I'm thinking of putting casters on the one with a grinder so that way I can move it if need be. The one thing I do remember is when you're using the wire wheel to clean stuff off something messy it tends to throw **** everywhere behind the grinder. I'm thinking I could open the entry door and point the grinder outside so it throws the stuff outside instead of on the wall. Then you simply just wheel it back to its "home."

I took a vintage axle press, bolted it my basement floor and it works perfect for what I do around the house. I also rigged a bench grinder using the other old axle press to one of my house posts. These are in my basement which stay much warmer in the winter and cooler in summer than the old shop.

The old bench grinder is actually pretty stable even though it might not look that way.

I was going to secure it better but I was not sure I wanted it there all the time . Anyway it works great when I do need to use it. :) It is a Craftsman bought in the late 60's and still works like the day we bought it.

Ended up with two HF heavy duty grinder stands. I sprayed a couple coats of semi-gloss black on both of them as the finish on them out of the box wasn't anything amazing. One I bolted to the floor and through drilled the middle pipe so I could nut and bolt it together. I bolted a HF 5" multi-purpose vise to it. It can do tubing, and it's nice that the head can rotate as well. So far so good. The other grinder stand I put on lockable casters and put an 8" HF grinder on it. I replaced the coarse wheel with a wire wheel and put a 60W LED 5000K bulb in the light. Very happy with both setups so far. I also put a 50/50 mix of coolant and water into the water trays so I don't have to worry about them freezing this winter but can still use them for cooling hot items from the vice or grinder.
