I started to get prepped for winter today and fired off the generator and getting gas out of lawn mower and small tractor. Realized even with the sta-bil in the gas it smelled a bit bad (especially in the generator). I had picked up a HF hand pump siphon but was not expecting much, I was right. So any thing good for a hand pump style siphon? Thanks!

If you put the engine higher and get the HF pump started it should dump out the fuel for a while.

Also stabil has a 2 year shelf life and when you buy them sometmes already expired!

Bigger tanks, a ball/shaker siphon works great. Lawnmowers etc, piece of fuel hose or otherwise and a mouth full of gas.

If you have a compressor, put a diagonal slit in the hose near the exit end.
Blowing air (downstream) into the slit with an air nozzle will start the siphon.

I have been using the hand pumps intended for kerosene heaters for along time. They are available at tractor supply are cheap and work well in small engine tanks

A good friend of mine had a SeaDoo with some ancient gas in it. He had tried to start a siphon by mouth for about an hour, and got a lot of gas in his mouth for the effort...

I grabbed a chunk of fuel line, his compressor and blow tool, and it was empty in minutes.

He laughed, but I figure his beer didn't taste as good as mine the rest of the night... lol

SuperSiphon works great, very easy to get the flow started, and a large bore for good flow. About a gallon in 35-40secs with a 1/2" ID hose.

It's a piece of copper pipe swaged to trap a spring and marble inside. It's basically a reverse snorkel. You just dip that in what you want to empty, give the hose a couple of quick vertical shakes to fill the hose, tip the hose into where you want the fluid to go. Then go do something else for a few minutes while it runs.

No more sucking on a fuel hose or even getting any fuel on your hands.

I have a universal electric fuel pump you buy at any auto parts store. I bent up a piece of flat stock, mounted the pump and a toggle switch to it. Ran a reasonable length of wires with alligator clips on the end. I rig up what ever length of those works for said job. It's a little slow if you have to transfer a lot of fuel, but its a steady flow so in the end works good.

I use an outboard primer bulb. East to get the flow started and it keeps going. I learned this one when I had an outboard that would not run on old fuel (pre ethanol) so at the end of the season I would put the tanks on the roof of my Suburban, take off the engine fitting, stick the hose in my fuel filler opening, squeeze the bulb a few times and go do something else. Come back in 10 minutes and change tanks. I dislike the taste of gasoline so this is my go to method

These work quite well. I used to use them to drain fuel tanks and they work fairly quick.

I second the outboard motor fuel line idea.
I find it easier to start than the super siphon

:thumbup:An old mechanic showed me this 25 years ago when I was first starting out. Have never had a mouthfull of gas ever! And people are amazed when they see it.

Ayuh,.... 40 years ago, my mentor, an ole Mechanic, taught me to pull a siphon with yer thumb on the end of the hose,....

Works the same way as that thing in the picture shake/ siphon above,....
Only use yer thumb, insteada the check-valve,....

HF has the bulb style squeeze siphon, even cheaper than their pump style and works much better. I used it to empty my el camino tank before I dropped it last month. Easy.

You can find outboard primer bulbs cheap in most Walmarts.

Actually the fastest way to drain a lawn mower/generator is to have a low profile catch can that is lower than fuel tank and an oversized piece of hose. Put the one end of the hose in the catch can. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and shove it into the other end of the big hose. You can use needle nose vice grips to pinch off the fuel line from the tank if your catch can start to get full.

There is another way to do this. You need a siphon hose, another shorter piece of hose and a rag. Shove both pieces of hose into the tank, making sure the long one goes down to the bottom. Place the opposite end of the long hose in your catch/transfer can. Shove the rag into the filler neck so that you have a reasonable tight seal. Blow, hard, into the short hose. Keeping blow until the siphon starts.

I have the secret trick to siphon gas with a hose the old fashion way and I don't end up with a mouthful of fuel.

A CLEAR HOSE that is about 5 feet long! No joke! **** on hose until fuel is half way down the hose and then aim into gas can.

Stick a hose in the tank. Wrap a rag around the hose and a blow gun, covering the top of the tank. Shoot a little air in the tank and the liquid will flow.

It's a venturi, air passing the end of the hose is travelling faster than the air inside the hose, this creates low pressure at the end of the hose. This pressure is lower than the pressure over the top of the fuel in the tank, which then forces the fuel through the hose. Look up bernoulli's equation and venturi, it should make sense after that. It's the same reason airplane wings make lift.

I used a cheap drill pump to empty 40 gallons out of a boat this fall. Worked great, make sure its a well ventilated area!!!! Drills make sparks the whole time they are running and will light gas vapours up!

What good are these? Most modern vehicles have siphon traps that make it impossible to siphon gas out of the tank.

I though so too, but with a 1/4 line you can get by that ball, it just takes a little time.

The important thing is to leave just enough in them tomstart and run them dry, making sure the carb is empty. If you don't run them dry remove the carb bowls and drain them that way.

Super Siphon's work awesome. Two downfalls to them though...

1. The copper end needs to be submerged when you're shaking it and in shallow tanks, it's hard to do.
2. The diameter is sometimes too large for the application. They need to make a small and large size.
