Need rust prevention advice

I built a couple steel railing for my porch several years ago. Primed and painted...near the Pacific Ocean. Rusted badly in a year.

Well, I ground out all the rust and welded patches in and started researching ways to prevent this again. I want to do whatever is going to be done myself.

There are several coatings that I found...the one I am thinking of using is POR-15
Rust preventative coating. I was then going to prime over that and install, seal and paint with latex house paint.

Anybody have any suggestions, comments...words of advice?

I would say Por15 or their competition. It would probably last years if you follow the directions. Try the sampler kit to see if you like it.

This is going to be an interesting thread in my opinion. I will volunteer that a urethane coating is going to be a whole lot better than the latex that you’re mentioning.
My understanding is that POR 15 might be a two-part urethane. On the other hand POR 15 might be epoxy?
The problem with grinding out the rust is that you will never get it all; it is sort of like cancer but the iron/steel doesn’t have any natural defense capabilities once the infection gets below the surface. So there might be a rust converter type of product you could use. And then maybe a cold galvanizing compound.

POR 15 will do the job. You are right to prime and coat over it. If you don't it will turn milky in color, if exposed to direct sunlight. POR stands for "paint over rust". If the metal is completely encapsulated and sealed from water and oxygen it will last a long time, even if subjected to salt air or spray.
Word of advise: Don't put the lid on the can with any POR on the lip or it may never come off again. It creates a permanent bond between close fitting metal.
