Need some 25mm+ wrenches

I recently got a small excavator and my selection of wrenches only go up to 24mm. The machine has a lot of hoses/bolts that are larger than that...

Any recommendations on metric wrench sets that are larger, say 25mm-32mm or so?

Not looking for super high end stuff, I'm just a homeowner/weekend warrior wrencher...but I tend to believe in the "buy once cry once" mentality. A solid set that I can pass down to my son but doesn't require a mortgage to purchase is what I'm looking for.

Big wrenches are really expensive from name brands. For a machine like that I would get a set of large angle wrenches to deal with fittings and a big socket set for whatever nuts and bolts you might need to loosen or tighten. A heavy equipment mechanic I know has a few sets of HF jumbo angle wrenches and they do a fine job in the field seeing heavy use. You see Neiko around here too, but HF rules the roost in farm shops.

I bought my large metric wrenches from Cripe Distributing. USA made Armstrong/KD/Allen for $6-10 a piece.

Sunex and other asian companies make "topper" sets, essentially for this purpose. I don't worry nearly as much on "quality" and amazing tolerances on big stuff. It can't be junk, but I'm much more worried about the tolerances on a 10mm wrench, than a 32mm.

Not sure how tight these bolts are, I like these for running off fasteners after breaking them free. That, and stubby adjustable wrenches.

Yes- SAE and used. Trust me SAE is more than close enough for larger fasteners and hoses.

Also invest in larger sockets which you will use more than wrenches on bolts. Fittings you will need combo, 4 way angle, crows foot, and pump/service wrenches

HF metric wrenches in those sizes work fine for car steering stuff. Should also work fine for other stuff.

No need spend big bucks. The average heavy equipment/truck repair shop will not have all Snap on or even Proto wrenches on the shop wrench rack. And all the shop wrenches are usually in SAE. I would actually focus on getting large sockets and a 3/4 ratchet first. Harbor Freight should be sufficient for occasional use. The $50 or so I spent on their SAE service wrench set is money well spent. They get the job done and it beats spending hundreds on a set of service wrenches that I don't use often. Unless you can score some large used USA made wrenches for cheap, cheaper options will work fine

When my company got new hydroelectric units installed by Fugitsu?, the several $M in equipment came with a wall full of big wrenches in the tool kit, up to 200mm or so. They all looked like HF quality.

Pretty sure big wrenches dont tend to break and out of tolerance by 1mm doesn’t matter either.

I second the comment that you need these as angle wrenches to get at hydraulic fittings.

Sunex has a set of 26mm through 32mm angle wrenches on Amazon. That’s a good start. It’s common to encounter 34mm and 36mm on some excavators, those need to be purchased separately and they are rather expensive ($60 each).

Hf sells a 15 piece service wrench set that goes to 36mm. 30 degree offset. these are not combos. the handles are shorter so they fit in tighter spaces plus they are thinner than normal. you can slip a cheater over the handle for more leverage if needed.

I ordered that Sunex set of angle wrenches from amazon that was recommended for now. I may grab those HF service wrenches too, those look thin and like they'd squeeze into tight spots, which there's plenty of on this machine.

I'm covered on sockets at least. I got a set of Proto 3/4" metric impacts up to 40mm from my dad a few years ago. Have barely used them but they'll come in handy now. I just need a 3/4" ratchet now too...I have a 1/2"-3/4" adapter but would like a dedicated 3/4" ratchet.

Probably some used options if you look around but with lower tooth count. This is a nice smooth mechanism rated to 1,000 lb/ft. The 40” breaker bar is nice too.

Browsing their catalog, it doesn't appear (with the exception of Set 760 (6mm-50mm 28 piece) or D979 (6mm-32mm 24 piece) they sell, as a set, anything larger than 24mm.

They have larger wrenches, but only in Satin finish:

I know you already bought something so I guess this is for someone else that might find the post.

I’d go for DIN 894 wrenches in this situation. As a bonus, the range you need is still what would be considered “small.” So if you already have a 24mm, you’d only need add a 27, 30,32, and 36.

Stahlwille 4004s would be my choice but Gedore makes a good wrench in this style too. Those four should cost less that $100.

Even though they look pretty boring these are made with very good steel and will take a beating over a lifetime of hard use.
