Need some advice......building desk from old maple butcher block workbench top

so I get this old hard maple butcher block work bench top..... came out of a school that was closing and was either a work bench or drafting table or something, but regardless, I had to sand the heck out of it to get the pencil stabs and graffiti off..........either way its free, heavy duty as heck and free

suggestions on refinishing? I'm afraid regular poly wont soak/stay??

I want to make a desk out of it, any suggestions for legs or drawer based sides??
