I will be working for a company that will be starting a new path in their business. I will be doing some assembly/installation of compactors in the field. I will need a mig welder and a generator. I believe our budget is around $2500.

We will mostly be welding 14g mild steel chutes to 1/4" angle iron with. What would be the most effective (portable) welding setup. It will have to have the ability to be unloaded and loaded from a pickup truck by hand and moved to the installation location.

I was thinking a Millermatic 180 and a portable gas generator i'd say somewhere around 7500 watts.. Could I use a 110v welder or should I stick with the 220v?

Am I in the ballpark or would you have other suggestions, advice. I know there are some very knowledgeable people here and figured if anyone had great advice it would be the members GJ.

Thanks
Steve

Thermal arc makes a "Scout" really nice little unit. Personally I would skip the wire welder scheme for field work, thermal also makes machine similar to the Maxstar, if I was doing this it would be my choice, run a genset to the Max and it can then be used from line power where available. It is dual voltage but will do this kind of work from a 120V circuit, it has really almost put my engine drives to sleep.
