Need Some Help/Advice - Used Snap On Ethos Pro Scan Tool Question

Hi everyone,

I want to purchase a very nice used Snap On Ethos Pro scan tool. The only thing I need to know is will the scan tool continue to function without the latest software subscription service? I have searched everywhere and can't find a definite clear cut answer. I have older vehicles and only work on them, so I'm not interested in bringing / keeping it up to date, etc. but just want to make sure Snap On can't "brick" the thing or something. I feel silly for even asking this but with tech today, and the fight against right to repair, etc. you never know. I just want to make sure that I can scan DTC's and use the bi-directional functionality and tests from now on. I believe the last update on this was 18.2. I REALLY appreciate anyone that answers, thank you so much.

It will function normally as designed. As long as you are not wanting to hook it up to anything newer than it is dated for.

I guess I should say some update would add in functions, for older years. I would guess engine management would be pretty functional up to date it is. Sometimes they will add in other module information as it is updated. So you may not have ABS or airbag.

I would look to see where and how it fits on the snap on platform. Meaning check out if they are even offering support. Updates or maybe what the last update was and if it is still available. Also maybe check about the ability to repair it.

It will still function. Obd2 generic will work on basically everything, enhanced data will work up until the update model year.

I haven't updated mine in 2 years and it works fine. It bugs me about an update being available every 30 days but I just ignore it.
18.2 isn't that long ago, if I recall correctly.

Some newer dodges/merc/fiat started getting weird around 2016, but I don't mess with that new of stuff since I sold my shop.

18.2 is 4 years old, so 2019 to current cars you are limited to OBD2 for the most part.

I bought a Solus Legend last fall for 2300 dollars BNIB off the **** van with 21.2 software.

one of the nice things 17.2 and newer does is let you add keys

the software updates cost more than a new machine on sale, which is why you see guys with 4 year old machines trying to get 800 dollars for them because the software updates would cost more than a new tool, some like mine are $600/yr ... needless to say I won't be upgrading mine anytime soon

It is my undersatnding you can't do 1 upgrade to get current, you have to pay for all the ones in between too

Thank you gents, sorry for the late reply it has been a crazy last week. I did end up purchasing the Ethos Pro. The scanner looks almost new and had everything with it including the case. I did call Snap On first to make sure it was not owed on or red flagged for anything and they said it was good to go. It has 18.2 as the last software update. I did call Snap On diagnostics and spoke to someone that said it is no longer supported so it wouldn't even be repairable by them at the end of this year, which kinda ***** but pretty much figured I would be on my own anyway.

Being that this is my first bi-directional scan tool I want to take it slow and learn as much as I can, especially with things like functional tests, or any kind of programming commands, etc. Is there a place besides YouTube you all recommend for learning? I have gone through the manual, all the Snap On diagnostic videos on this particular unit, and am going through their 40+ videos of quick tips. I also am liking their diagnostic channel on YouTube where their national trainer Jason Gabrenas does live videos. Also do you all know of a good site to research DTC, etc.? I have briefly looked at engine-codes.com and that seems decent and offers possible causes, etc. which is nice, but thought you all might have better ones to look at.

I've wrenched all my life, but now I would like to get my scan tool diagnostics capability on a similar level as my mechanical ability which is why I wanted a nice scan tool. I thought long and hard about the Autel, or Xtools, but in the end I just wanted the Snap On unit, and I like the fact I'm not supporting foreign interests with the purchase honestly.
