I recently picked up a couple of small boxes described as "machinist tools" from a garage sale. I was able to figure out most of them, but these have me stumped as I am not a machinist. Any help is appreciated.

Item 2 has a shallow square female end in the base

Item 3 the T wrench has a hex end.

Item 4 is some type of expander. Here it is disassembled.

Oh, and here is another one. I think it may be some kind of scale as it is exactly 6 inches long.

Can't help you on #1, #2appears to be for driving taps or reamers with a bit brace, have a similar tool for driving dies, #3 may be a wrench for a lathe chuck, some had male hex screws rather than the more common female square, and #4 appears to be a shop made expanding mandrel, most likely used to mount something in the lathe referencing off its center hole. Can't help on the last item.

454ragtop how does the bit hold the tap ? I could see it working (key word if it had a set screw to hold the taps in place) but I don't see any set screws. Still in the dark on that bit???

You're thinking about it in comparison to a common hand held tap wrench, not something driven by a bit brace. I couldn't imagine driving a die with one either, but there it is, in a huge vintage tap and die set I have. But again, that's just my best guess, from looking at it and knowing of my die driver, but perhaps that's not even what it was made for.

Just a guess.

Since the brace is usually used for wood working, as are lag bolts, I think that #2 is used to drive square headed lag bolts.
