Need some help with machine tools for a friend

A good friend's father passed away recently and she is cleaning out the garage for her mother. He was a car guy and has some pretty serious machinery that my friend will sell. None of us know what the stuff is worth.

If this isn't bad forum form (there is nothing in this for me except trying to help my friend), I'd take any help from you out there who know what this stuff might be worth (Old Car Guy?)

The milling machine is a Powermatic/Burke Millrite. Lots of attachments and bits to go with this one. 230V 3.4Amp, 1140rpm.

The valve refacer is a a Black&Decker 11/16" Super-Service
Valve Refacer, 9amps, 115V. Serial #2648050. The case is full of
all the collets and stones.

The arbor press is a Greenerd #3 1/2. Also has markings
"Rockwell 68-4873"

The lathe is a South Bend.

The SB looks to be a bigger model. Would need more pics to really see what you have there. SB's can go from free to a couple of thousand depending upon the condition and acces. it has. That one looks to be around the block a few times.

I bought a couple of 9 inchers for $100 a while back. Two foot beds with motors, complete but no accessories.

Greenard makes nice stuff. I've been to their factory to run off a 25 ton hydraulic punch press. VERY cool old building they have.

I am no expert and with small demad for some of this prices can vary alot. Actual in preson consition is important too. But off the top of my head.

2k ish for the mill

$200-700 for the lathe depending on accessories. About $250 apart.

$300 for the B&D depending on accessories.

Those are not lathe accy's - that lathe is in pieces. Top pic is at least part of the headstock; belt goes from motor to the pulleys.

2nd pic is your three C's: carriage, compound and cross slide

3rd pic is a rotary table and is a milling accy

Too bad it is all apart like that, makes it very difficult to see what is missing. Don+t see a motor or tail stock. That thing (new) in the wooden box is not part of it but looks to be a rotary table, worth a couple of hundred (good acces, BTW). My guess, the lathe is also worth a couple of hundred or so , depending upon who wants it.............looks kind of old and well used.

Do a Google search +Valve grinder Kijiji+ etc. to get an idea on the others. Our local Kijiji had a similar one recently.

The milling machine is probably the only thing that is really worth anything. The B&D valve facer is pretty ancient technology and really will not hold the tolerances needed for any modern engine, plus parts are about impossible to find. Plus it looks like the part that holds the valve and feeds it into the grinding wheel is missing

The arbor press might be worth a few dollars to someone who really needs one, but Harbor Frt and others sell them for pretty cheap now days

The guys over there should be able to give you a good idea of what they are worth. From what I can see of the lathe, probably not much, but some of the attachements like the rotary table that looks basically new, might be worth something.

I dont think there is any way you will get 2K for the mill. I figure maybe $500 if you find the right buyer. I am looking at a pretty nice Bridgeport 9x36 variable speed and I am pretty sure I can get it for 2K

E-bay is a good source for prices, do some searching there and you will find almost anything.

I get flyers from used equipment houses almost every week and there are literally thousands of these types of machines going for just barely over scrap metal prices

I will ask around some friends to see if anyone is interested in the stuff since you are local.

that mill seems to be fairly well setup. value depends on condition and how well all is working. could be as little as $750 and as much as $2000.
top dollar would be $2500

on the valve grinder, its missing some major pieces so unless you have them the base is worth more than the unit.
the B&D valve grinders are not worth much as parts are hardly available anymore. the discontinued them in 78 and parts have gone downhill from there.

I would like to see what is in that base and I would like to see if he had any of the seat grinder stuff. if so I may be interested in the seat grinder stuff as I have a full B&D set that I have been collecting spare stuff here and there for.
(I also have a sioux setup and prefer that one)

The mill it self isn't worth much ($500-800, you can buy a decent BP for a $1K) but if the vice is a Kurt (can't tell but its blue and has a name plate where it should), you've got some domestic tooling and the collets are domestic R-8s, you can part it out. If you work at it, you could squeeze a G out of it. A clapped out grinder and a box of lathe bits aren't going to be worth much more than scrap. Regardless, hope it works out for the lady.

I still think that mill could be worth closer to 2k. Alot of people don't want a Bridgeport. They are over a ton and many have seen decades of daily use. This powermatic looks well kept, fairly equipted and clean. It also looke to be the perfect size for a personal shop. I paid $800 for my Bridgeport with a ton of collets but no tooling. Seems they sell for alot more at times but industry does not want them and alot of hobby types don't either. This one will be worth more than a Brodgeport I believe. But its all about finding someone who appreciates it. Not like finding a buyer for a GTO.

You may want to post on the Home Shop Machinist Forum & Practical Machinist. The Burke Mill is sought after by Home Machinist due to the ease of moving them into basement shops ,etc. The arbor press is good American iron and a step up from the imports.

Thanks for all the feedback. Just to clear up the location, all of this stuff is at my friend's mother's house which is much closer to the left coast than the right.

well ill tell you a brand new mitutoyo digital 2 axis read out is about 10g I have no idea what a used one would be AP Mech have any idea?

Th vise on the mill should sell for atleast 100$ if its in good shape.

I have a lot of powermatic equipment they made mostly woodworking machines. I bet that powermatic might have come out of an old school program as powermatic sold a lot of their machines to schools. (Today it is all computers).
I would think $1500.00 to $2500.00 would be in the ballpark you can still get parts which makes it nice.

I believe the Wilton group now owns powermatic I never understood what happened powermatic reported very strong sales then **** they sold out to china.

Go figure!
