My new garage was just finished last week and I'm starting to move all my tools from the basement to the garage. I realized that the only thing between thieves and my stuff is a flimsy construction garage man-door with a rather poor lock.

What do you guys do for security? I live in a rural area which is great to keep nosy neighbours' eyes from seeing my business but it also means a secluded area for crooks to work when we aren't at home. Any thoughts?

Get a metal door with a deadbolt, secured with a metal reinforced jam plate.
Put a camera up on the eave pointing toward the door.
Add a pager alarm system that will call your cell phone if someone gains entry through the secured door. Or, just keep a mean dog inside while your gone!!!

i just bought one of these for my front door and it would work well for your side door also. its got a steel door with a triple latch setup, and steel reinforced hing and striker plate areas. should hold up to a few good kicks
if you look close you can see the triple lock

strong doors with good locks.

if you have internet connection (wired or wireless) to the garage you can put up cameras. There are apps out there (if you use a smartphone) that will allow you to be alerted anytime there is movement while simultaneously recording to a remote computer. I think one of the home security companies now offers a feature like that too.

Biggest security risk is letting folks know what's in there...

Steel door with a deadbolt that has at least a 1" throw will do wonders at keeping people outside, out.

If you want to go the video surveillance, a friend of mine just installed this exact video recorder system about 2-3 weeks ago at his store and loves it. He can watch his store from his home pc and even his android (they also make an iphone app too).

How long are the locks on that door?

Put a decent lock on the door, and reinforce the door jamb. Burglars often get in by kicking the door open, and what happens is the door jamb splits out.

I see you're pretty new here - use the search function in the toolbar at the top of the page, there are plenty of past discussions about garage security.

Re-enforce the door jambs, longer screws in the hinges, longer screws in the striker plates. I have a piece of 10ga steel behind the dead bolt and cylinder lock bolt that is lagged into the wall studs.

Got windows ? Keep them covered from prying eyes. Some guys have used shelf paper that makes it look like frosted glass. I have some blinds up the keep out the unwanted eyes.

Like Stuart said, there are several threads on this matter.

the deadbolt is 1" and the 3 latches are only standard length.
