After pricing 1hp buffers I decided I'm going to fabricate my own. I have a new Dayton 1hp sitting around doing nothing. The buffer is to be belt driven, 3/4" shaft with a pulley in the middle and a pillar bearing on each side. What I am having a hard time coming up with ideas is how to mount the buffing wheels. My lathe is none functioning right now so I cannot machine the threads, one side has to be left to tighten and right to loosen, so it's not like I'm going to find one lying around.
Anyone have an idea how I can mount my wheels? Do you think shaft collars would be able to hold at 3500 RPM?
The motor I have is 1750 RPM's, Ill need to bring the shaft speed up to 3500 RPM's or so, I'd also like to be able to change speeds back down to 1750 for buffing plastics and loading the wheels with compound, a lot of compound is wasted trying to load up at 3500 rpm.
